In this full-length lesson plan, students will closely examine the final lines of Shakespearean characters before their deaths (if you know Shakespeare, there are quite a few!). I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year. • Literary Devices Quizzes: A total of ten quizzes, each with 10 questions about a wide range of literary devices: metaphor, personification, symbolism, imagery, alliteration, etc. Open each class with a quiz to assess whether your students can accurately identify the literary devices used in the poems from the homework packets. • Discussion Questions: This bundle features a list of discussion questions for the first poem in each of the homework packets. The discussion questions will ensure that every class discussion starts on a productive foot. Every discussion question is grounded in concrete textual details and challenges students to arrive at lucid interpretive insights! The assignment sheet contains detailed instructions for how to generate a formalist analysis of a poem (analyzing how the poem's formal features contribute to its meaning). This meticulously-crafted resource contains all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length ELA Escape Room for your child at home. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy and creative thinking. Your kid(s) will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they applying in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

The ghosts of William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou, Jane Austen, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes have risen from the grave to lock your child inside your home! They are upset because they believe that teenagers these days spend too much time making TikToks and not enough time practicing their grammar, poetry, and other ELA skills. In order to appease them, your child must solve 5 different Language Arts skills-based puzzles which lead them to 6 locations through the home and ultimately, to a final prize.

• Figuratively Speaking: In the first task, your child must identify the figurative language device used in popular 2020 songs. Shaded boxes in the correct answers form the first code which leads to the next task.
• Lit Match: In the second task, your child must match literary terms with their definitions by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by the lines form their second code leading to the next task..
• Where The Heart Is: In the third task, your child must identify the part of speech used in inspirational quotes about home. Shaded letters within the correct answers form the third code which leads to the next task.
• Ah-Mazing: In the fourth task, your child must solve a word maze. Letters collected along the way form the fourth code leading to the next task.
• What's The Word?: In the final task, your child must complete the multiple choice quiz. Once he/she puts the correct words together, he/she must travel to that location in the home to escape and claim the prize.

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! This project should take about 2 weeks, from start to finish and is perfect for display.

I always choose Finalistsbased on poem structure, meaning and how they visualized their metaphor. I then ask another teacher to select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. And of course, the winners get a prize!
