Primary Role Key Stages/Processes Water (Hydrologic) Transports nutrients and provides a medium for chemical reactions. Evaporation, precipitation, runoff, and transpiration. Carbon Building block of all organic compounds; regulates Earth's heat balance. Photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition, and combustion. Nitrogen Required for amino acids and nucleic acids; the most abundant atmospheric gas. Nitrogen fixation, nitrification, assimilation, ammonification, and denitrification. Phosphorus E...

This guide provides an overview for a 10th-grade biology lesson focused on the crucial biogeochemical cycles—water, carbon, and nitrogen—and their importance in sustaining life. The lesson emphasizes how human activities disrupt these natural cycles, leading to significant consequences for ecosystems and biodiversity. Students will learn to identify key processes within these cycles, analyze human impacts, and understand the interconnectedness of ecosystems. Materials needed for the lesson include cycle diagram cards and colored pencils for interactive activities. Additionally, the guide outlines learning objectives, key vocabulary, and a reflection activity to foster deep understanding and critical thinking about environmental issues.
