Original Prompt

create a 4 page lesson for 7th grade on finding percents under 100 of a number

This resource focuses on introducing students to the concept of percentages, guiding them to calculate any percent less than 100 of a given number through the use of decimals and fraction conversions. It begins with defining what a percent is—"per 100"—and provides common conversions for quick reference. The document outlines a step-by-step method for calculating percentages, illustrated with a worked example, and includes guided practice problems for students to enhance their skills. It highlights the real-world applications of percentages, such as calculating discounts while shopping and determining tips at restaurants. Additionally, the resource presents practice sets for both mental math shortcuts and multi-step calculations, aimed at reinforcing the learned concepts. An error analysis section encourages students to diagnose and correct mistakes in percentage calculations. The document concludes with real-world scenarios requiring calculations, self-explanation prompts, mastery challenges, interleaved reviews, and a synthesis activity to summarize the learning. This thorough approach makes understanding percentages practical and applicable in everyday contexts.
