You will receive a graphic organizer that requires students to track the adversities faced by the debate team during and/or after viewing, a poetry analysis tool for "I, Too", which Denzel Washington as Professor Tolson recites during the movie (one of my favorite parts!), as well as a fun, interactive speed dating discussion activity for after viewing. I show this movie before reading Mildred Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry since the settings are so similar, but you could use it in your own classroom in a variety of different ways! I, Too by Langston Hughes Foldable Poetry Analysis + answer key!

This product will allow your students to easily understand and analyze "I, Too" by Langston Hughes by breaking it down line-by-line!
Instruct your students to fold the paper in half the long way, and to cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps, and analysis question inside.
As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the poem for word choice, tone, symbolism, and literal vs figurative meaning. I've included an answer key for your convenience!

Speed Dating Discussion for The Great Debaters

"Speed Dating" is a fun alternative to a traditional class discussion. Students have a set amount of time to discuss a question with their partner, then quickly move onto the next partner and question. The Great Debaters movie analysis: overcoming adversity graphic organizer

This is an assignment that asks students to identify 6 examples of adversity that the Wiley College Debate team had to overcome on the left, and explain how they did so using evidence from the movie on the right. Lastly, they are asked to make 2 connections to works of literature they've recently read.
I show this movie after reading a number of pieces from the 8th grade Pearson text about African Americans facing diversity, studying relevant court cases, and reading the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", but you could really have the students connect the movie back to whatever texts you're reading at the time that are relevant.
