Fraction Multiplication and Division Word Problems and Challenges - Editable

By MsVisualizer

This google doc contains multiplication and division word problems with fractions and mixed numbers. They range from very easy to challenging. There are also 4 real world, multi-part challenge problems included that would be great from a Criterion D task if you are at an IB school or if not, great to push your high-achievers.

Fraction Multiplication Investigation- When does the product get smaller/larger?

By MsVisualizer

Card sort matching fraction multiplication problems to various visual representations and verbal descriptions. The recording sheet and follow up reflection questions ask students to sort the problems into expressions where the product is less than both factors, less than one and greater than the other, and greater than both factors and generalize when each happens.

Check out my other card sorts focused on connecting visual representations and algebraic/numeric expressions.

Convert Fractions to Repeating Decimals with Long Division Investigation

By MsVisualizer

This is an investigation activity that students can do independently or in groups to discover the patterns when converting fractions to repeating decimals. It provides examples of how to use long division to convert a fraction to a decimal and then has students apply the same strategy to other fractions with the same denominator. These examples make it great for a sub plan or for early finishers with no instruction needed from the teacher.

Students will investigate the patterns in the decimals for fractions with denominators of 9ths, 3rds and 7ths.

It includes reflection questions to generalize the patterns and apply them to make predictions.

Non-curricular BTC Task: Estimating the size of Rational and Irrational Numbers

By MsVisualizer

This is a fun non curricular thinking task that goes beyond just asking students to convert rational numbers to other forms and put them in order. It provides students with an opportunity to think more deeply about the relative sizes of rational and irrational numbers and strategically choose which shapes to place where.

There are many valid approaches and answers to this task so it is a great way to start the year and build a thinking classroom.

This includes both a version made for 5th, 6th, or 7th grade with mixed numbers and decimal side lengths as well as a version for 8th/9th grade which includes square roots as well.

Differentiated Fraction Multiplication and Division Communication Project

By MsVisualizer

Each student chooses a different pair of numbers (one fraction, one whole or mixed), make up a corresponding word problem for multiplication and one for division using their two numbers, answers the question using a representation, and checks their answer using keep-change-flip. An MYP Communication rubric (out of 8) and a 100 point rubric are both included so you can choose.

Lots of Differentiation with

- Choice of problems ranging from easier to very challenging

- Reference sheets to support students in the more challenging aspects

- Additional number choices for students who need a modified curriculum

- Option to do it as a partner project or individually

This was originally created for MYP Criterion C (communication) but can be used in any 5th or 6th grade class. I included a rubric that adds up to 100 to accommodate other grading policies.

Fraction Division Slideshow and Notes -unit fractions with some bonus challenges

By MsVisualizer

This slideshow and corresponding notes & practice packet focus on division with unit fractions including 1/a divided by b and a divided by 1/b. There are some bonus/challenge problems included for students needing more of a challenge that have mixed numbers and non-unit fractions.

This uses visuals and connects to students prior knowledge about division as dividing into equal groups or dividing into groups of a certain size. It does not use Keep Change Flip or any tricks.

Rational Numbers on Number Lines Thin Slicing

By MsVisualizer

These number line problems range from extremely accessible to very challenging for even my highest students. They gradually take students through different rational number concepts and strategies while working on a number line. This really helped my 6th graders better understand the magnitude of fractions, mixed numbers and decimals and how to place numbers on the positive and negative side of the number line. It promoted great discussions in the student groups.

It includes 4 pages of student worksheets or thin slicing problems with an answer key.

Random Group Cards - Equivalent Fractions, FDP, Exponents, and More!

By MsVisualizer

These random grouping cards contain 120 sets of matching cards to use for random grouping. Each set has 3 cards that are equivalent for students to find their random group for the day. This is a total of 360 cards for you to choose from or change throughout the year. You can choose topics ranging from multiplication facts, equivalent fractions, decimals and percents, all the way to equivalent expressions with exponents and variables.

The cards are meant to be simple enough for students to quickly find their matching cards to find their random group for the day. There are tons of cards to choose from so you can ensure your students will be able to find their groups quickly.

This product includes

- Multiplication Facts up to 14 (there are plenty of smaller numbers if you want to exclude the larger ones) (3rd-6th Grade)

- Equivalent Fractions (4th Grade)

- Fractions with Circle Models, Bar Models, and on Number Lines (4th - 5th Grade)

- Adding, Subtracting, and Multiplying Fractions with Like Denominators (4th-5th Grade)

- Equivalent Fractions, Decimals, and Percents (6th - 7th Grade)

- Equivalent Expressions with Exponents (6th - 8th Grade)

- Equivalent Expressions with Variables (6th - 10th Grade)

The cards are not labeled with numbers or letters to indicate which board they should go to. You can either add this yourself or have them choose their board.
