French Dots and Boxes Game - SAVOIR + INFINITIVE - No prep printable

An easy and fun no-prep game that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for the target vocabulary and grammar when teaching savoir + infinitive! This is a one-page dots & boxes game including directions. This game could be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with annotation/whiteboard tools. The following construction is used: SAIS TU....?

60 different infinitives are used in this game.

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the words on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most. Each of the 7 "families of cards" begins with one of the following, and conjugations in the present tense are used in the JE - TU - IL - NOUS - VOUS - ILS forms:

• Je sais + infinitive

• Est-ce que je sais + infinitive

42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize verb conjugations and the savoir + infinitive construction, and it will have your students speaking to each other in French the whole time! They will make affirmative and negative statements and will use EST-CE QUE to form simple questions.

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in the "pioche". One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He or she might say, "Est-ce que tu as JE SAIS CHANTER?"

The goal is to come up with complete families. The different verbs represent the families. There are 6 cards to a family (JE - TU - IL - NOUS- VOUS - ILS). Students will find it helpful to group together the cards that have the same picture at the top (flower, flip-flops, etc.) If the player doesn't have it, he says "pioche". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!
