Discuss the importance and value of friendship and what makes a good friend, then sing this song after you read the story. Use the chant or lullaby to help the bear feel better! Chant or sing this extension to the popular book "Bear Feels Sick" by Karma Wilson. Talk to the children prior to starting about what being a caring and good friend means and that friends help each other when they are sick. Then introduce the chant or song to the children and sing after every time that the says the bear feels sick. Use the rhythm chart to decode the rhythms and discover quarter rests. Use the song to listen and decode for the do solfege syllable. Adaptable for PreK-2nd grade.

A wonderful book and extension lesson to teach children about caring for others! Use this book to deepen social emotional learning in your classroom while still teaching music. Discuss why hugging and caring for others is important, how children feel when they hug/are hugged by someone and practice caring by rocking stuffies/dolls to the song that I wrote for this book. Additional chants are great for practicing rhythm, steady beat, ta and ti-ti and triplet rhythm decoding. There is even a worksheet for additional practice which can be used digitally. Use drums and rhythm sticks for the chant if desired. Great as a Valentine's Day activity or any time of year! Great for ages PreK-3rd and the lesson can be used with/without the book.
