Original Prompt

make a practical activity sheet about the lesson, theory of island biogeography

The Theory of Island Biogeography (MacArthur & Wilson) explores the relationship between species richness and factors such as island size and distance from the mainland. It posits that larger islands tend to support more species due to greater resources and habitats, leading to lower extinction rates. Conversely, islands closer to the mainland facilitate higher immigration rates as they are more accessible to new species. The equilibrium model explains how species richness stabilizes when the rates of immigration equal extinction. This resource illustrates these principles through a data table of species observed on various islands, guided practice scenarios for analyzing data, and real-world applications such as the Florida Keys Mangrove Study, which illustrates the Equilibrium Theory in action. It also touches on habitat fragmentation and its effects on species survival in isolated patches.
