Original Prompt

Students need to learn about the East African trade with Asia and the monsoons and dhows that helped with this

This learning resource focuses on the Indian Ocean Trade Network, analyzing the impact of monsoon patterns and dhow technology on the trade between East Africa and Asia. Students will explore how the predictable nature of monsoon winds influenced trade timing, with the NE and SW monsoons acting as natural calendars for merchants. The resource emphasizes the design features of dhows, such as lateen sails, shallow drafts, and strong rudders, which facilitated successful ocean voyages. Key vocabulary includes terms like 'monsoon,' 'dhow,' and 'trade route.' Engaging activities encourage students to trace trade routes on maps, discuss the significance of dhow design, and reflect on the cultural exchanges that occurred during lengthy stays in port cities.
