The hydrosphere encompasses all the water present on Earth's surface, including oceans, glaciers, groundwater, and surface water. This lesson aims to educate learners about the hydrosphere's composition, the significance of water for ecosystems and human life, and the challenges presented by water scarcity. It will cover the distribution of Earth's water, emphasizing that approximately 97% is found in oceans, while less than 1% is accessible freshwater from sources such as rivers and lakes. The session also guides learners to articulate personal connections to water usage and encourages them to consider the implications of regional water shortages, using Cape Town's water crisis as a case study. Students will engage in reflective practices around water conservation and the importance of sustainable water management.
