Original Prompt

Interpret how international organizations (such as the OAS or UN) respond to challenges to democracy using Venezuela as a case study. Develop and defend a policy recommendation for how the U.S. government should address the situation in Venezuela, using evidence and constitutional principles. Critically examine the balance between national sovereignty and human rights in U.S. foreign policy decisions.

This resource explores the international community's responses to the democratic challenges faced in Venezuela since the political crisis began in 2013 with Nicolás Maduro's presidency following Hugo Chávez's death. It provides insights into the economic downturn, allegations of electoral fraud, and the resulting protests that led to significant political tensions, including a 'dual presidency' crisis. The document examines the balance between national sovereignty and human rights, highlighting the roles of organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations (UN). It encourages students to analyze the proposed actions versus the actual powers of these organizations, while also considering the implications of U.S. foreign policy. Through structured reading support and comparative analysis, students will engage with key concepts such as democracy, sovereignty, and humanitarian aid, ultimately crafting policy recommendations grounded in constitutional principles and ethical decision-making frameworks.
