Original Prompt

Create a lesson for high school technical math students where they must use an atlas to find mileage to specific places in the state of missouri.

This learning resource focuses on logistics planning, specifically the calculations necessary to determine distance, travel time, and fuel costs. Students are tasked with utilizing an atlas to find point-to-point mileages, applying the Distance Formula (Distance = Rate × Time), calculating travel times based on an average speed of 65 mph, and determining fuel costs using the formula (Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Fuel Price per Gallon). The resource includes a worked example detailing the journey from St. Louis to Springfield, with specific calculations for distance, time, and fuel costs. Students then practice similar calculations across various city pairs within Missouri, requiring them to determine the distance, time, and cost of travel for each route. The document also includes a challenge extension that prompts students to consider the implications of rising fuel prices and reduced travel speeds on their overall costs, alongside a metacognitive section for self-reflection on their learning process.
