Original Promptan end of the year poetry assignment that my 7th graders can do on paper because they will not have computers. We have covered free verse, blackout poems, and rhyme.
This resource is designed for a poetry workshop focused on three distinct forms of poetic expression: free verse, blackout poetry, and rhyming poetry. Students will learn to master each form by creating original works that adhere to specific structural guidelines and criteria.
The first goal is to compose a free verse poem that emphasizes vivid imagery and emotional resonance, allowing the poets to express personal memories without the confines of meter and rhyme. Students will engage in brainstorming sessions to capture sensory details that inform their writing.
The second goal involves blackout poetry, an innovative method where students identify 'anchor words' in a provided text to unveil new meanings. Participants will follow a structured process consisting of selecting words, blacking out unwanted text, and revealing their unique poem alongside a creative title.
Lastly, students will explore rhyming poetry by crafting stanzas that adhere to a chosen rhyme scheme. They will receive a reference for different patterns and word banks to inspire their creations. Each poetic form encourages personal expression and creativity, promoting both self-reflection and artistic development.
