It’s so important that we learn how to respond to others in an effective way. As educators, we often see our students struggle to communicate with empathy and respect. Being able to have constructive conversations is an essential skill for our students to learn.

This resource equips teachers with practical suggestions for a positive approach to communication. Too often we see our students wrestling with ways to talk to each other that are socially sensitive. Especially in times of conflict, we want to provide our students with productive ways to verbalize their thoughts and feelings. It’s critical that our students learn to listen to each other while also feeling heard.

Responding to others with constructive words is a beneficial skill for our middle and high school students to learn. This ability to talk to others kindly is a life skill they will need in their daily life not just as kids and teenagers but into the future too.

This resource features a total of 10 different communication scenarios with an example of a "rude" or "mean" response statement. (Statements also have negative tones). Students must read the scenarios (or situations) and the "rude/mean/negative-toned" response statements provided TO FRIENDS and:

  • explain what effects those particular responses can have on the person and/or outcome of the situations.
  • write two ways they can change and filter the response statements, so that they have more respectful, positive tones.

This resource can greatly help your students practice:

⭐ responding appropriately even when experiencing difficult/negative emotions

⭐ self-control

⭐ perspective-taking

⭐ filtering their thoughts before communicating

⭐ focusing on language and choice of words

⭐ thinking before speaking

⭐ conflict resolution

⭐ showing empathy
