The Ten Frame Matching Game is designed to help students practice number recognition, number words, counting, and understanding ten frames. The game aims to improve students' ability to match the numerical representation (digits and number words) with the corresponding visual representation in ten frames.
Materials Needed:
- Game Cards (Printed on regular paper, card stock, or laminated for durability)
- Number cards (1 to 10) with digits and number words.
- Ten frame cards with varying numbers of dots (1 to 10).
**Instructions:
**
Preparing the Game:
- Print out the game cards on your preferred choice of paper or card stock. You can also choose to laminate them for long-term use.
Setting Up:
- Shuffle the deck of cards so that the order is randomized.
- Lay out all the number cards (1 to 10) face up in a row or on a table.
- Place the ten frame cards (1 to 10) in a separate stack, face down.
Playing the Game:
- Invite a student to start the game. They will pick one card from the ten frame stack without revealing it to the others.
- Next, the student must count the dots on the ten frame and then find the corresponding number card (digit and number word) that matches the quantity of dots on the ten frame.
- Once they have found the correct match, they should place the ten frame card on top of the number card to make a pair.
- If the student correctly matches the cards, they get to keep the pair and take another turn. If not, the cards are placed back in their original positions, and it's the next player's turn.
Winning the Game:
- The game continues until all the ten frame cards have been correctly matched with their corresponding number cards.
Variations:
- To make the game more challenging for older students, you can add a timer and see how many matches they can make within a specific time limit.
Learning Outcomes:
Improved number recognition and reading of number words.
Enhanced counting skills.
Developing an understanding of ten frames as visual representations of numbers.
Promoting memory and concentration.
