French speaking game - Je n'ai jamais - For beginners and advanced students

This low prep activity is a French speaking game for beginners and advanced students, All students can practice speaking and forming the passé composé with verbs that use both être and avoir as helping verbs, including reflexive verbs.

The way the cards are organized even beginners can use them and have a great time playing this fun speaking game. Students practice saying "je n'ai jamais" or "j'ai déjà" followed by something they may or may not have done. There is a stack of cards with French and English and another stack with only French.

Use this game in class with small groups or at a French club event. you can cut out the cards and include the "how to play" card so that if you have a very large group they can read the instructions without you having to explain the game. Just print out the cards, laminate if possible, punch holes in the upper corner and attach with a ring. A fun no prep activity for years to come!

Included with this resource:

  • 75 game cards in French only - Black and white and color versions
  • 75 game cards in French and English - Black and white and color versions
  • How to play

How the game works:

Begin your sentence with "Je n'ai jamais" if you have never done what is written on the card. Begin with "J'ai déjà" if you have.

Other players can react in a variety of ways:

  • Moi aussi
  • Moi non plus
  • Moi, si

If you say that you have done something (and you're not a beginner) you have to tell the story about when you did what is on the card in French.

What some teachers are saying about this French speaking activity:

Used this with my French III classes today as a warm-up to review negation. Students were completely engaged and really enjoyed the activity. My supervisor walked in for an observation just after we started the activity, and when she left the room, one student remarked "You did good, Madame!" It was really them doing all the work, but he was right. She loved the activity, too. Merci!

I just love this activity because it gives students a chance to speak without a whole lot of pressure. I always do this with 2 circles of students, the interior circle facing the exterior circle. They enjoy getting up out of their seats for awhile, and of course, the activities listed are interesting.

I can't wait to use these in class today. These last few days before break are always so rough. These looks like something that will keep the students busy.

My senior high students LOVED this. Great to find French speaking activities that appeal to them and are fun.
