Groundhogs Day Non-Fiction Text and Light Energy Activity

This is a non-fiction text about groundhogs. It is an independent or guided reading passage for second and third grades but would make a great read-aloud for the lower grades. It is paired witha science activity that involves making shadows while thinking about how the sun rotates during the day. Students will be making small stick puppets (groundhog pattern included) and using flashlights to mimic the sun's movements and observe shadows cast by their groundhogs. There are graphic organizers for independent follow-up work after the reading on several different levels, as well as a follow-up sheet for after the activity.
