Students who struggle with working memory or have slower processing speed may struggle to decode multisyllabic words, even when those words are divided into individual parts. Syllable Pyramids are an effective way to provide practice combining syllables to read longer words.

How I use this resource:

• Students read the syllables from top to bottom, adding one syllable at a time until all syllables have been decoded and can be combined to read the multisyllabic word.
• Create pyramids that focus on a specific skill such as closed syllables or r-controlled syllables.
• Pre-teach longer words within a text to reduce cognitive load and increase fluency while the passage is being read.
