Geography influences almost everything — yes, even the clothes we wear! Take a look at geography from a different and fun perspective: How does physical and cultural geography influence what clothes we wear, the materials that are used to make the clothes, and when we wear them throughout the day, etc? This lesson introduces uses Italy to introduce the concepts that influence the fashion industry. The student will then choose their own country and will apply the concepts to create a clothing line.

TEACHER GUIDE

Lesson: How to Dress in Italy (Fashion Geography)

Grade Level: 7-12

Time Frame: 60-90 Minutes

Type of Activity: Group Cooperation and/or Individual Activity

OBJECTIVE:

The learner will explore the influences of climate, location, temperature, culture, and topography of the fashion industry in Italy and other country regions.

The learner will build awareness about the environmental and cultural impacts of the fashion industry.

The learner will understand the value of clothing and the global resources required to create garments.

The learner will work cooperatively to demonstrate their understanding of geography fashion by designing clothing for a specific country region.

MATERIALS:

  • How To Dress in Italy Reading Marking the Text Activity (One copy per student)
  • How To Dress in Italy Summer Planning Guide (One copy per group)
  • How To Dress in Italy Guiding Questions Cheat Sheet
  • How To Dress in Italy Winter Planning Guide (One copy per group)
  • Create a Year-Round Clothing Line (One copy per group)
  • Paper Models (One copy per group)
  • Colored pencils for each group, construction papers, scissors, rulers, glue, tape, and other needed supplies.
  • Exit Cards (One copy per student)
