Phonics Activity Reading & Writing CVC Words Center Hunt Cards K, 1st, 2nd Grade

Looking for an engaging and active way to reinforce phonics skills? This scavenger hunt combines movement and learning, making phonics practice fun for Kindergarten to 2nd-grade students!

This phonics scavenger hunt is packed with everything you need to get your students practicing essential phonics skills in an exciting, hands-on way. With step-by-step teacher directions, a student-friendly recording sheet, and an answer key for easy assessment, this activity is ready to go! Your students will match pictures to CVC words, build fine motor skills as they write lowercase letters, and enjoy the built-in movement. This is perfect for independent practice or centers, whether you're teaching in small groups or as a whole class. This is #5 in the Scavenger Hunt Series. It is perfect for kindergarten, first grade, early second grade or any student working on reading CVC words. Start with whole-group instruction to guide your students through the process of identifying the picture, matching them to words, and writing their answers. Once they master the format, this scavenger hunt becomes an independent literacy station that can be used again and again with different content!

Common Core Alignment:

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3: I can know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

✏️CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3: I can decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.

How it Works:

  1. Students may start at ANY card with their pencil and paper on a clipboard. If this is too much to carry: Adjust the activity, by “hiding” the cards around the classroom writing surfaces such as tables and desks and have a pencil at each station.
  2. Write the number of the starting card in the top left square.
  3. Look at the picture, say what it is and think about what letters spell the initial, medial and final sounds.
  4. Walk around the room searching for the CVC word located in the oval in the top right of another card that matches the picture
  5. When found, write the CVC word on the line in the first box.
  6. Following the arrow on their paper to box 2, write the number of this card in the box on the top left.
  7. Repeat until all boxes are full. Students should return to starting card when completed.

You will ❤️ it because:

Teachers will love how easy this scavenger hunt is to set up and how versatile it is—use it for independent practice, centers, or whole group activities. It’s aligned with a trusted phonics curriculum and provides a great way to assess students’ understanding. Plus, the built-in movement keeps students engaged and focused, making phonics practice more fun!

Students will love the excitement of searching for the right answers while moving around the room. The matching activity encourages them to think critically about phonics and fine-tune their motor skills, making learning feel like a game.
