The activities in this packet are part of our classroom Social Studies center. During each Social Studies unit I set out a variety of artifacts for students to explore. Artifacts for our Then and Now unit include: books about pioneers, animal models, animal footprint cards, covered wagon model, spun wool, “old” kitchen utensils (dipper, pot, etc.). I put out a different activity every few days for a two week period. Students work independently on each activity during their daily five time or when they have completed their assignments. They use the artifacts to help complete each activity. For example, students can use the pioneer books to search for common and proper nouns or use the books to confirm pioneer facts and opinions.
