Anticipation Guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Self-Management | Self-Regulation.

You can use an Anticipation Guide:

ANTICIPATION GUIDES

There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:

▶️ Variation #1:

⭐ ***Part 1: ***The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.

⭐ Part 2: The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.

**▶️ Variation #2: **This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.

Students respond to thought-provoking statements to spark reflection and discussion before exploring the topic of self-management. This activity helps teachers gauge students’ current beliefs and attitudes about personal responsibility, organization, and self-control. It also allows students to hear different perspectives, challenge assumptions, and think critically about the habits and choices that impact their success both in and out of school.

SELF-ASSESSMENT

This resource includes a single Self-Management Self-Assessment designed to help students reflect on how effectively they manage their time, responsibilities, and emotions. It features a student-friendly scoring guide at the bottom to make self-reflection simple and meaningful. This tool encourages students to think about how they handle organization, focus, follow-through, and self-control in their daily routines. By rating their own habits, students identify personal strengths, recognize areas that need improvement, and set realistic goals to build better self-management skills.

Students will score each statement using the following scale: 2 for “Regularly,” 1 for “Occasionally,” and 0 for “Never.”

This assessment also serves as a valuable resource for teachers, counselors, and advisors to gain insight into students’ self-management habits, monitor growth over time, and provide targeted feedback that supports their overall academic and personal success.
