Many young teens, and even adults, struggle with maintaining a filter, finding it challenging to prevent their thoughts, feelings, or emotions from influencing their choice of words—especially when upset or feeling wronged. They may impulsively express the first thing that comes to mind, neglecting to consider the potential consequences. This tendency often leads to unnecessary drama and negative energy. It is crucial for students to acquire the skill of controlling their emotions in awkward situations and thinking before they speak. Our words possess the power to either uplift or damage people's self-esteem and confidence. While honesty is fundamental to lasting relationships, expressing true feelings should be approached with respect, care, and appropriateness.
This resource focuses on 12 scenarios related to "Filtering Your Thoughts." Students are tasked with reading each scenario and expressing their initial thoughts in writing. Subsequently, they are encouraged to "filter" these thoughts and communicate them verbally in a manner that is both appropriate and respectful, avoiding any harm to others' feelings. This provides students with chances to practice selecting their words thoughtfully, substituting negative thoughts and expressions with positive energy. It also helps them understand that they can convey their point honestly while maintaining appropriateness and respect.

▶️ 12 TASK CARDS (COLORED and B&W)
- The Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be integrated into various settings, such as larger lessons, guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussions before sharing with the entire group, or individual sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian. Both variations of Task Cards feature identical scenarios. Printing options include gloss paper or regular paper, and they can be laminated for durability. Organizing them on a binder ring is also an effective method.

This resource also includes 12 Writing Response WORKSHEETS with lines, so students can write their responses to the following writing prompt task:
Consider the scenario and share your thoughts on how you would handle the situation. Describe how you would internally filter your initial reactions and articulate them verbally in a manner that is respectful and sensitive, ensuring you don't hurt the other person's feelings.

▶️ 12 SCENARIO GRAPHIC ORGANIZER WORKSHEETS
This resource also includes 12 Graphic Organizer-style WORKSHEETS, which can be used to differentiate for students. It includes the scenario and two line-boxed sections where students write possible thoughts they might have about the scenarios presented and how they’d filter those thoughts in the second box.
These worksheets are great for “Quick Writes,” Do Now activities, Note-Taking/Reflection periods, Formative Assessments, or can simply be used as part of a larger lesson or discussion! They include breath-taking borders, fonts, and clip arts by other contributing artists.
Also included are three blank Activity Worksheets for you to duplicate and generate your own scenarios and students write them down - allows for great flexibility.
Comprehensive Sample Responses are provided for EACH of these scenario worksheets, offering an additional adult perspective on potential responses to these scenarios.
