The Outsiders Indirect Characterization: Ponyboy's Self-Image

This is an activity that requires students to practice indirect characterization. It works best with chapter 4. Students read 6 quotes that I post around the room, and write in their journals what each one says about Ponyboy's self-image.

Next, they have to select an additional quote from the novel that reveals a different character's personality. They have to write one paragraph about this person’s character that they can infer from the quote.

This file contains directions for you to post on the overhead or at each table, as well as the 6 quotes for you to post around the room or in a packet for each table to look at. It also includes an example paragraph I wrote for quote #4.
