Vocabulary Starter

NEED TO TEACH VOCABULARY IN YOUR MIDDLE OR HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM AND YOU'RE NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

You came to the right place! I have been teaching for 5+ years, I have my Master's in Education with a focus on Literacy and I didn't know where to start.

So, I went back to everything I learned in my graduate program and re-read everything I could find.

I wrote & designed a student-engaging template to help students in my classroom to deeply internalize a word. I gathered key word lists when I didn't have a word from our daily reading, and thought about how to teach vocabulary so my love of etymology and words could be shared with my 10th graders. I've included all that and a guide to help other teachers get started with implementing and teaching vocabulary in THEIR classrooms.

Is this book for me?

  • You want to teach vocabulary explicitly
  • You want flexibility to choose your words daily based on what you’re reading
  • You need versatility to choose your own words from a given list
  • You want your students to deeply internalize the vocabulary they learn
  • You’re not sure where to start

Then this book is for you!

Adaptable to every classroom in every situation, this is more than a fill-in-the-blank activity. Your students will have a guide to build a vocabulary for a lifetime of learning.

WHY TEACH VOCABULARY EXPLICITLY?

Generating curiosity and delight in playing with words supports long-term memory, enhances the connection between orthography and meaning, and develops a disposition which stimulates word consciousness. It also builds vocabulary! All of these are a part of a vocabulary rich classroom environment.

How to Play:

The game commences with all cards face down, and players take turns flipping over two cards. When a pair of cards display the same word, the players must write it on their recording sheet and retain the cards. If the cards don't match, they are turned face down again. The player with the most cards when all cards have been collected wins!

Ideas to Play:

  • Engage in Memory Games with High-Frequency Words each week for varied and dynamic language practice.
  • Reinforce word retention by combining different weeks of the same module, culminating in a comprehensive understanding of the sight words.
  • These versatile cards offer boundless opportunities for interactive learning experiences. For example, you can print the cards of multiple weeks or even modules once for each table or group of students, with all cards face-up. Challenge them to identify the words you announce before other groups do. The first group to find the word keeps the card, writes it on the recording sheet, and emerges as the winner with the most cards at the end!
  • Encourage active learning by allowing students to pick a card, write the word, and then choose another card. This repetition strengthens word recognition and writing skills.
  • Foster cooperative learning by pairing students. One student can pick a card and dictate the word to their partner, who will write it down. A collaborative approach through rote practice!
  • For an added challenge, have one student in a pair pronounce the sounds of each letter in the word while their partner writes it down.

Share your innovative ideas with us in your review. We value your input!

How to Print:

  1. Printing Front and Back:
  • Start by printing the front side of the cards.
  • After printing the fronts, reload the printed sheets into the printer.
  • Print the back design on the other side of the sheets.

2. Paper Choice:

  • For added sturdiness, it's recommended to use thicker paper.

3. Lamination:

  • Consider laminating the cards for increased durability.

4. Page Numbers:

  • Each module from module 4 consists of 4 pages of front cards, with Module 1 being only 1 page long and modules 2 and 3 being 3 pages long.
  • Pages 8 to 38 are for the front of the cards.
  • Page 39 is designated for the back of the cards.
  • Page 40 is designated for the recording sheets to write down the pairs of words you create during the game.
  1. Cutting Guidelines:
  • Use the cutting guides on the back of the sheets to cut the cards with corners.
  • Alternatively, you can cut them without corners, following the border of the images.
  • Cutting without corners takes more time but may result in longer-lasting cards.

Unleash the joy of learning with our HMH Spanish Sight Words Memory Game for Kinder! Happy learning!

1st Grade Find and trace the tiny HMH High-frequency and Decodable Words

By Ms Garcia Store

Unlock the world of vocabulary with this exceptional resource designed to reinforce the mastery of 450 first-grade HMH high-frequency words and decodable high-frequency words. Dive into a captivating journey as your students explore the hidden treasures of language within delightful illustrations. With 36 weeks of engaging content, this resource guarantees an enriching learning experience.

Equipped with a magnifying glass, students will embark on a thrilling word hunt, uncovering the tiny HMH week words ingeniously concealed within captivating animal pictures. They will skillfully circle or line these hidden gems and refine their writing skills by tracing the dotted words in the designated boxes. Encourage their creativity as they craft meaningful sentences using one or several words of the week, and watch their artistic flair come to life as they color the accompanying drawings.

There is no better way to strengthen vocabulary acquisition than by actively engaging with the written word. Through close attention to word formation and practice, students will develop a deeper understanding of language, enhancing their overall literacy skills.

Don't miss this unparalleled opportunity to immerse your students in an adventure that fosters word recognition, writing proficiency, and creative expression. Let their imagination soar as they embark on this transformative language-learning journey.

There are two different resources available:

  1. 'Find and write' resource: Watch your students embark on an exciting word-hunting adventure as they search for hidden HMH week words within captivating animal pictures. Equipped with a magnifying glass, they'll uncover these tiny words and skillfully write them in the designated boxes. Encourage their creativity by inviting them to craft unique sentences using the week's words and bring the illustrations to life with their own colorful touches.
  2. 'Find, circle, and trace' resource: Ignite curiosity and engagement as your students set off on a thrilling quest to locate hidden HMH week words in charming animal illustrations. Armed with a magnifying glass, they'll circle or underline the discovered words and develop their tracing skills as they carefully trace the dotted words in the provided boxes. Just like the other resource, they'll have the opportunity to express their creativity by crafting meaningful sentences using the week's words and adding vibrant colors to the artwork.

Both products can be purchased separately, but also together for a lower price.

Differentiation:

For children with greater ease when it comes to tracing the hidden words, I'd use the "Find and write" resource, while for the rest, I would opt for the "Find, circle, and trace" resource.

You will find three PDF files with three different font sizes of the hidden words for children with problems seeing words due to their visual ability. Use the one that suits each child or your group best. The two smaller ones will require the use of a magnifying glass, but most will be able to read the larger one without using it.

I hope your students enjoy this very motivating activity. Let me know in your comments.

Additionally, page 96 provides 4 recording sheets to write down the pairs of words you create during the game.

1st Grade Find and write the tiny HMH Spelling Words

By Ms Garcia Store

A great resource for working on the 300 first-grade HMH spelling words of the week writing the tiny words hidden in the drawing. There are a total of 36 weeks.

Download the first module of this resource for free when subscribing to our newsletter!!

Your students will have to look with a magnifying glass for the tiny words of the HMH week hidden in the pictures of animals and write them in the boxes. They will also be able to write a sentence using one or several words of the week and color the drawing whoever wants or finishes soon.

There is no better way to learn vocabulary than to write the words after paying close attention to how they are written.

There are two different resources available:

  1. 'Find and write' resource: Your students will have to look with a magnifying glass for the tiny spelling words of the week hidden in the pictures and write them in the boxes. They will also be able to write a sentence using one or several words of the week and color the drawing whoever wants or finishes soon.
  2. 'Find, circle, and trace' resource: Your students will have to look with a magnifying glass for the tiny HMH spelling words hidden in the pictures, circle or line them, and trace the dotted words in the boxes. They will also be able to write a sentence using one or several words of the week and color the drawing whoever wants or finishes soon.

1st Grade Memory Game HMH High-frequency and Decodable Words- Module 1

By Ms Garcia Store

Exciting Memory Game to Enhance First-Grade Students' Learning of HMH Sight Words!

Try the first 3 weeks of this incredible resource and unlock the full set by clicking on the following link for only $8.50!

Memory Game HMH High-Frequency and Decodable Words

The set consists of 36 unique decks, one for each week, providing a comprehensive learning experience. Students will practice 8 High-Frequency Words and up to 6 Decodable Words per week with every deck, resulting in exposure to more than 400 words!

How to Play:

The game starts with all the cards face down, and players take turns flipping over two cards. If the two cards reveal the same word, they must write it on their recording sheet and keep the cards. If the words don't match, they turn the cards face down again. The winner is the player with the most cards when all cards have been taken. If some students find the game challenging, they can opt to play with the cards face-up for added support.

Ideas to Play:

- Engage in Memory Game sessions with High-Frequency Words, Decodable Words, or both simultaneously each week for a varied and dynamic learning experience.

- Integrate different weeks of the same module to reinforce word retention at the end of a unit, ensuring lasting mastery of the sight words.

- Utilize the versatile cards for an array of engaging games. For instance, print the cards of several weeks or even modules once for each table or group of students, all face-up. Challenge them to find the words you announce before other groups do. The first group to find the word keeps the card and records it. The group with the most cards at the end emerges victorious!

- Foster active learning by allowing students to pick a card from a deck, write the word, and then select another card. This repetition reinforces word recognition and writing skills.

- Encourage cooperative learning by pairing students. One student can pick a card and dictate the word to their partner, who will write it down. Learning together through rote practice!

- For an additional challenge, have one student in a pair pronounce the sounds of each letter in the word while their partner writes it down.

If you have more innovative ideas, feel free to share them with us in your review.

How to Print:

To print the cards, first print the front of the cards. After that, reload the printed sheets into the printer and print the back design. For sturdiness, use thicker paper, and consider laminating them for enhanced durability.

Pages 1 to 10 are the front of the cards, while pages 11 and 12 are the back. You can try both designs to see which one aligns better with your printer. Additionally, page 13 provides 4 recording sheets to write down the pairs of words you create during the game.

Prepare for an enjoyable and effective learning journey with our engaging Memory Game for HMH Sight Words. Happy learning!

The complete set comprises 36 distinct decks, one for each week. During the first 5 modules (15 weeks), students will practice 6 Decodable Words per week, followed by 10 words a week in the last 7 modules (21 weeks). An impressive total of 285 words to master!

How to Play:

The game begins with all the cards face down, and players take turns flipping over two cards. If the two cards reveal the same word, they must write it on their recording sheet and keep the cards. If the words don't match, they turn the cards face down again. The player with the most cards when all cards are taken is declared the winner. For students who find the game challenging, they can play with the cards face-up to make it more accessible.

Game Ideas:

- Play Memory Game individually or in pairs, depending on the students' comfort level with remembering and writing the words.

- Combine different weeks from the same module to reinforce learning at the end of a unit.

- Utilize the cards for countless games. For example, print the cards of multiple weeks or even modules, distribute them face-up to each table or group of students, and have them find the words you call out before others do. The first group to find the word keeps the card and records it. The group with the most cards at the end wins!

- Let students pick a card from a deck, write the word, and then select another one to continue the learning process.

- Foster collaborative learning by having students work in pairs. One student picks a card and dictates the word to their partner, who writes it down. Learning together through repetition!

- For added practice, have one student in a pair say the sounds of each letter in the word, while their partner writes it down.

If you have more innovative ideas, we'd love to hear them! Feel free to share your creative game variations in your review.

To print the cards, first print the front of the cards. After that, reload the printed sheets into the printer and print the back design. For sturdiness, thicker paper is recommended, and you can even laminate them for extra durability.
