In this project based learning unit, middle school/early high school students learn about city planning and architecture as they research and design their own city. In addition to using Internet search skills, they'll utilize CAD skills using Sketchup (free download) and finally build the city from chipboard and other recyclables and name their final creation. .

This unit focuses on students exploring many of the aspects of creating their own business and introduces some of the day-to-day requirements of that business. Students choose a business with their team, prepare a business plan, advertising materials and a budget and finally reflect on their learning utilizing a variety of MS Office products or Google Products, and a choice of a variety of free Web 2.0 tools such as Audacity, Paint, Canva, Adobe Express and others specified in each section of the lesson. Introduction to Adobe Photoshop gives students a step-by-step tutorial to learn the beginning commands of Adobe Photoshop. After following the instruction (screen shots are included), students combine their “before” and “after” pictures into a simple PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to make grading easy. Finally, students complete a short creative activity to demonstrate their understanding of their learning. Additional links to other tutorials are also included in the lesson to assist learners, as needed. Instructions are for the paid PC version of Adobe Photoshop CC (2014 or 15), but are easily modifiable for Apple/MAC computers. In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. Real Estate Career Simulation: Flip a House Project lets middle schoolers see how real estate investors purchase, improve, and resell homes for a profit. Utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, students “purchase” a home of choice from a list and then determine the improvements they want to make to it, all while staying within their budget. Then, they design the home, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download ). Finally, students use Microsoft Word to prepare a one-page sale flyer for their renovated home. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

This project lets students learn about the engineering and design of hotels as they research and design one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students complete a math project about hotel design that focuses on perimeter, area, square footage, measurement and scale skills (formulas are included). Next, they work with their team to research information about the design and engineering involved in hotel construction and plan the design, materials and budget for the hotel they will design. Then, they work individually to create their own hotel to scale in Sketchup (a free CAD software program, download available at: https://www.sketchup.com/download ) and after completion, determine which of the team’s designs they will actually construct. Finally, they build a model of their hotel using recycled materials, following the Engineering Design Process with their team. After completing their hotel, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.

This career unit gives students an introduction to the law, public safety, corrections and security career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based project comic creation project is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. A quick reference/tutorial is also included for StoryboardThat (free, no download needed). Additionally, a group legal case analysis project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to simulate the career and allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.

Technology, CTE and Engineering classes are gaining in popularity at the middle school level. This fun exploration of Architecture is perfect for grades 6-8 to learn history, design and explore careers in this field through a variety of computer based projects.

Students start by researching some of the influential architects and create a PowerPoint to showcase their information. Next, they research and design a "tiny house" utilizing Sketchup (free software) to learn the basics of CAD while letting their creativity and problem solving skills help them design a beautiful, yet functional small living space. Finally, students explore careers in the field to learn more about different architectural jobs of interest and present their findings in a MS Publisher newsletter.

My 8th graders loved these assignments and created some amazingly creative products! I hope your students will enjoy it too!

Need a fun way to introduce Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to upper elementary or middle school students? This great lesson lets students learn the basics of Microsoft Excel (or Google Sheets) as they create pixel art using the program. First, they'll create a quick pixel art from a given example and then they'll create their own! These are also fun lessons to use if you just need something for a one day lesson.

I've used this with 7th and 8th graders who used their free time to create even more art! I hope your students have as much fun as mine did learning Excel or Google Sheets!

This career unit gives students an introduction to the Information Technology career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. An individual project to create a web site using Weebly (www.weebly.com) offers students an opportunity for a real-life look into this career. A group project to learn more about cybersecurity is provided to allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.

The “Learning Google Docs” Beginner Lessons start students with no previous knowledge of Google Docs on a path of learning the most important and frequently used commands to give them a quick start. Each lesson has a short, step-by-step tutorial that includes screenshots to walk students through the new tools they will use in the lesson. Then, they are given a creative task to solve, using those skills to create a document. There are five lessons, each taking no more than two (50 minute) class periods.

This lesson has been revised to be compatible with the latest version of Google Docs (2-2020) and also includes the older instructions and resources that were included with the original lesson for previous purchasers who are re-downloading the lesson. The older lessons are included in their own folder within the .zip file.
