The traditions of April Fools' day include playing pranks on people, wrapping up on the first of April with the noisy exclamation, “April Fools!” as a way of telling the duped person he had been a victim of the April Fools' Day hoax. All that is certain is that, whatever the origins, the practice of media organizations engaging in an April Fools' Day prank has surely cemented the status of this secular holiday.

People who were late to receive the news, or who did not realize that the new year began on January 1 and therefore kept celebrating from late March to April 1, became the butt of jokes and tricks called "April fools." One of these tricks was to stick paper fish onto their backs and to cry out “poisson d’avril” (April fish), believed to symbolize an immature fish easily caught and a gullible person.

It is a lesson plan for 90 minutes related to April Fools Day. Students will find their tasks and their answers on different worksheets.

This product includes slides that are made up of the states that begin with the same letter on each slide, as these states can be confusing. For example: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas as well as their abbreviations so students can see the difference. Slides that show states that don't have any similarities, like Georgia, and states that have two words, like New York, are also addressed.

Each slide is provided with the state name and the abbreviation. Students can attempt to fill in the blanks of the abbreviations that were reviewed on each previous slide as well. This helps students to learn the spelling, abbreviations, and location of each state. In this product, students will learn about the Oregon Trail Westward Expansion. Vocabulary covered: pioneers, frontier, forty-niners, California Gold Rush, pioneer life, and The Oregon Trail along with a fill in the blank vocabulary review. At the end of the vocabulary review, a key is provided with the answers to all vocabulary words that are presented to help students fill in the missing blanks.

Students will learn about the westward expansion. What the west was in 1830, the causes of diseases and death along the Oregon Trail - scurvy, yellow fever, dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and wagon mishaps. how Indigenous Peoples that pioneers met on their journey west were helpful, facts about the covered wagons that were used to travel out west, what was packed in the covered wagons and why, and who the forty-niners were and what they were searching for.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. Throughout the product, after each page of notes is reviewed, students will answer short answer comprehension questions. At the end of the product, students are provided with a review that includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.
