Building reading comprehension is an important skill for students to learn. This AGE words literacy center contains hands on activities to practice reading single words as well as reading simple sentences.

What is Included:

• 1 AGE words sentence mat
• Picture cards for matching with the mat

To complete this activity, students will read the sentences on the mat and then match the pictures to the correct sentence.

Ways to Use:

• Simply lay the images on top of the sentence.
• Use hook and loop fasteners to attach the images.
• Use a baking sheet and magnets to attach the images.

Students will love the hands on nature of this activity. They are able to manipulate the images for a tactile approach to demonstrate their learning.

This activity is low prep. The mats just need to be printed out. The cards need to be printed and cut out. The activity can be laminated if desired for durability. Once created, this resource can be used over and over.

Learning the vowel sounds and why they make the sounds they do is VITAL to fluent reading. Vital Vowels is a daily practice in saying vowel sounds. This packet includes 2 activities to practice short vowel sounds aligned to UFLI lessons 8-18. These activities are intended to be used daily as a quick practice. They can be used in whole group instruction on the projector, in small group instruction differentiated to what students need, in a center rotation, or even for homework. Use the corresponding lesson AFTER it is explicitly taught and continue to use the same activity until the next vowel is taught, then move to the next level.

Directions

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which sight word they will read.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the Sight Word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding sight word on their worksheet.
• Students read the sight word out loud.
• Students should focus on pronouncing each word correctly and quickly.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a sight word, they should highlight or color the box. They could also cover it with a counter or place marker etc.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new sight word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the sight words on their worksheets.
