CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.A.1

Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

FRENCH MATHS | SANS CAHIER/PAPERLESS | NOMBRE ENTIER/WHOLE NUMBERS | INTEGERS

By French Made Fun!

Having trouble visualizing how to "break down" math concepts and how to structure your teaching? New to this grade level or unfamiliar with "how" to teach it? Tired of passing out worksheets? If you're wanting to try something else to see if your students become more engaged and confident in math... Look no further. No book? No problem. Printer broken? No problem. Multi-levelled or split classrooms? No problem.

Imagine math classes that require zero prep, zero paper, zero planning, and slides which not only prompt your students to engage, discuss, solve and prove their understanding, but prompt you to teach concepts at a slow, realistic pace? Imagine not having to write down examples on your board and having more time to assess your students in real time. This document does just that.

This is one my paperless teaching products; where my 74-page Slide Deck will take your hand and guide you to teach following a workshop model. I provide ample explanations, examples, step-by-step instruction, assessment and answer keys. Apart from the assessment materials at the end of this document, it requires virtually no printing. It just requires you (or anyone!) to be there to follow the Slide Deck.

This was created (and used!) for students in grades 5-7 and works great for older students on IEPs, students en adaptation scolaire, as revision for older grades, or for online learning. Partner work and independent work are imbedded in the slides. Students receive many guided explanations so they can work independently.

Let me teach you - and your students - how integers work.

This document covers the following concepts:

  • What is an integer? ;
  • A game about selecting whole numbers ;
  • Negative and positive integers on a number line ;
  • Zero is neither negative nor positive ;
  • Whole numbers have opposite numbers ;
  • A game about opposite numbers ;
  • Co-create rules for opposite numbers ;
  • Language used for integers (positive and negative connotations) ;
  • Compare whole numbers using symbols ;
  • A game about choosing the right symbol ;
  • Order the integers on a number line ;
  • Use the number line as a strategy for arranging whole numbers.

In addition to the 56-page slide deck, there are 18 pages of printable assessments (9 activities and 9 answer keys) which can be used as check-ins, formal or informal assessment, revision, printables for a substitute or just for independent work. There are answer keys for all printable assessments as well as answer keys imbedded throughout the Slide Deck for your students to reference throughout their learning.

Capture 5 math game

By Ms Garcia Store

Master addition and subtraction skills while having fun with Capture 5! This engaging game can be played by 1 to 4 players or teams, and it can be played on any of the ten different 100 charts ranging from 1 to 1000. Simply choose the chart and the number of players before starting the game.

How to Play:

The objective of the game is to collect 5 coins.

  1. Place 12 coins on the 100 chart by clicking once on 12 different squares. Each coin should be placed on a different number. If desired, players can place their tokens anywhere on the 100 chart by clicking twice or more times on a square. There are ten different charts to choose from, each ranging from 1 to 1000.
  2. On your turn, roll the dice (click once to activate and once more to stop) and move your token using any combination of the positive or negative numbers shown on the dice. You can use any number of dice from 1 to 5. The goal is to land on a square with a coin. If you land exactly on a square with a coin, capture it by clicking as many times as needed to place your token on that square. You can only capture one coin per turn, and it must be the last square you land on. For example, if you start on 45 and use the dice: +2, +10, +3, you record: 45 + 2 + 10 + 3 = 60. Click on your colored piggy bank (Blue, green, red, or yellow) to drop the coin into it and earn a point. Your turn is over.
  3. Repeat the same process (step 2) with every player. The first player or team to capture 5 coins wins.

You can play in six different modes:

  1. One player (Easy): Collect as many coins as you can in 2 minutes. Don't forget to click on the hourglass to activate the timer after rolling the dice for the first time. Place 12 coins on the board before starting the game.
  2. One player (Hard): Collect as many coins as you can in 1.5 minutes. Don't forget to click on the hourglass to activate the timer after rolling the dice for the first time. Place 12 coins on the board before starting the game.
  3. One player (Expert): Collect as many coins as you can in 1 minute. Don't forget to click on the hourglass to activate the timer after rolling the dice for the first time. Place 12 coins on the board before starting the game.
  4. Two players or teams: Place 12 coins on the board before starting the game.
  5. Three players or teams: Place 18 coins on the board before starting the game.
  6. Four players or teams: Place 24 coins on the board before starting the game.

Each game mode can be played on any of the ten 100 charts, allowing your students to practice with larger numbers.

The dice used in the game have a total of 40 faces, including positive and negative numbers ranging from 1 to 30.

Engage your students in exciting addition and subtraction practice with Capture 5! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further assistance. Enjoy the game!

5th Grade Algebra Review Game - Game Show Style

By The M-Intercept

Students will love this Jeopardy-like review game to review all 5th Grade Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards. Questions focus on solving expressions, writing expressions, equivalent expressions, analyzing patterns, mixed review, and key vocabulary words. Points range from 100 - 500, which reflect the increase in difficulty throughout each category.

**FULLY EDITABLE** While the game is complete, it is also editable in PowerPoint, making it easy to add questions or change the level of difficulty based on your students' needs.

The game includes 30 high quality questions - 6 categories with 5 questions each ranging in
difficulty from basic review (100) to challenging (500)

Solve Expressions: these questions require students to solve equations using the order of operations. All expressions are straightforward whole numbers, except the 500 point question, which has fractions.

Write Expressions: this category asks students to write expressions from phrases such as "nine more than six" and then increases in difficulty to writing an expression to match a real-world problem.

Equivalent Expressions: students are asked about whether or not expressions are equivalent based on the order of operations, use of parentheses and different ways to display division symbols.

Analyze Patterns: these questions involve continuing a pattern such as "add 8" and continue on to questions matching real-world situations. Some questions require reading and/or using a table or the coordinate plane.

Mixed Review: students are asked computation problems to review adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, as well as questions involving place value.

Vocabulary: this section asks about parentheses, expressions, evaluating, x and y coordinates, and corresponding terms.

This lesson is an introductory lesson for equivalent fractions and focuses on helping students visually and conceptually understand what it means when two fractions are equivalent. Starting with the basics, this lesson is a solid foundation for first teaching equivalent fractions or reinforcing the concept.

The lesson focuses on the use of visual models to identify fraction equivalence, and it does not include teaching the algorithm for generating equivalent fractions.  Fractions with denominators: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, & 12 are used in this lesson. The main objective is for students to identify equivalent fractions and make meaning of fraction equivalence.

Check out the second lesson in this equivalent fraction series: Lesson #2

Animated slides reveal problems step by step

  • Scaffolds instruction by slowly giving additional visual supports before revealing answer
  • Gives students think time to understand concept
  • Promotes student participation and active engagement during the lesson

Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.
