Students enjoy this practice concerning decimal place value. This pirate themed activity has students rounding to tenths and hundredths, ordering decimal numbers, and multiply by powers of ten using exponents. These supporting skills are important for students to master in order to be successful in higher level math.

My students found this activity a fun, quick review of these skills to complete before moving onto deeper operations with decimals.

This is a fun way for your students to show what they know about place value. It would be an activity to do once they have finished the unit on place value or a way to practice place value. This hands-on activity lets students create their own house using base ten blocks and then create a street full of place value houses. For added challenge you can add in odd and even and have the students make one side of the street odd and the other even. This activity is all student based and the teacher is there to observe what they know.

You will need construction paper, colored paper, and butcher paper.

These first grade math rings are for comparing two digit numbers. There are activities for drawing, using number bonds, addition sentences, greater than and less than, and more or less concepts to explore 2 digit numbers. Set 1: Students are given a number and must draw the number, make it into a number sentence (ex: 33 = 30+3) and create a number bond based on the number sentence. Set 2: Students are given a number and they must draw their number and then write the tens and ones for that number. Set 3: Students must record if the first number is greater than or less than the second number by using the greater than or less than symbol. Set 4: Students will look at two base ten block number representations and will determine if the first set is more or less than the second set. Set 5: Students will look at two different representations of a number (one side will be standard form and the other side will be either base 10 blocks or tens and ones representations) and students must compare and determine which is greater than or less than the first number. Set 6: Students will look at different number representations and determine if the first number is greater than or less than the second number. This set is slightly more difficult than set 5. Recording sheets are available to record your answers or you can laminate the math ring cards and record your answers directly on the cards. This resource is a self checking task card scavenger hunt that works on rounding up to the hundred thousands place. This resource could be done by students independently or within a group to supplement classroom content, practice for classroom assessments or state tests, or used as used as a review. Students will love the challenge and stay engaged in the task!

Students can begin at any task card; they must write the task card letter in the circle in the first box on the student work page. They complete the equation on that task card and record their work in the box on the work page. They will know that their answer is correct by finding that specific answer in the "Previous Answer" section on another task card. That one would be the next task card in their sequence and they would repeat the process until they have completed all task cards. The last task card should lead them back to the original one that they started with. **If their answer is NOT found on any of the task cards under the "Previous Answer" sections, students will know that their answer is incorrect and they need to try again.

Step by step directions, (with pictures), are included as well as an answer key with every possible correct sequence that students could have depending on which task card they start with.

Place Value. The backbone of our number system. Here are three place value games for helping students master determining place value of a number, for comparing values within each place, and for assisting students in determining when a number is greater or smaller than another. Each game is very low prep - Just print (laminate if you wish), cut apart, and play! Included in this set are Lock It In, Hangman, and Build A Number, all three games which have students use digit cards (or playing cards if you prefer) to build numbers and compete to see who has the highest number. ALL templates are included for cards, place value mats, and recording sheets. Some even have options of b&w OR color.
