Did you know it has been proven that when students use word sorts, they understand their words longer and deeper?

This is a spelling supplement (word sorts) to Myview Literacy or Savvas Realize for 2nd grade.

This includes the following:

*2 lists per Chapter.

*6 Units in all.

*ALL word sorts are included from 2nd Grade Myview Literacy program.

There is a Google Document with two links to Google Slides for every list. One link is to use for hands-on in the classroom and the other link is for computer work, centers, or to present on the board while you are teaching. The smaller slides are easier to print for your students and the larger slides are easier to view.

Word sorts are important for students to learn spelling words because they provide a hands-on and interactive approach to developing spelling skills. Here are some reasons why word sorts are beneficial:

1. Categorization and Organization: Word sorts involve categorizing words based on their spelling patterns, phonics rules, or other linguistic features. By sorting words into groups, students develop an understanding of how words are related and organized, which helps them make connections and identify patterns in spelling.
2. Active Engagement: Word sorts require students to actively engage with the words by manipulating and sorting them. This hands-on approach helps reinforce learning and enhances retention. It also encourages students to take ownership of their learning process.
3. Analytical Thinking: Word sorts promote analytical thinking as students analyze the similarities and differences among words. They develop critical thinking skills by examining the spelling patterns, letter combinations, and phonetic elements within words.

Once students become familiar with the process, they can complete word sorts on their own, giving them a sense of autonomy and self-directed learning. It also allows teachers to differentiate instruction based on individual student needs.

Here is what I do for spelling class each week.

Monday: Students will cut out and move their words into the correct spelling pattern category. Some words on our lists do not fit the category. We would consider those words oddballs. You can place those words outside the list but still practice saying the words out loud. Students will keep their words in a bag in their desk or chair pocket until the next day.

Tuesday: Students get their words back out and try to sort the words quicker. (Speed Sort). 

Wednesday: Students will write their words in their notebook as a list or draw a picture and write their words inside of the picture.

Thursday: We use a different organizer (worksheet) each week to practice our words.

Friday: We take our quiz.

All the kids need is a bingo dauber or dabber and they will dot or dab the sight word that matches the sight word shown under the basket of apples. This activity is perfect to enrich a lesson on sight words or review and could be used for independent work or placed in a center for Fall/Autumn. These pages are no prep and low ink!

This contains the full set of sight words for each level or grade! Don’t have a bingo dauber? That’s fine, as the kids can use a crayon, colored pencil, or other available writing tools to mark off the matching sight word apples. What's included in each resource?

Color by CVC Word Puzzles: Each set includes 5 puzzles in 2 difficulty levels for a total of more than 400 puzzles. Each color by word puzzle features 4 to 6 CVC words for a vowel family in both difficulties. I've included both a picture clue set and a word clue set. In the picture clue set, students look at the picture of the word and then find the corresponding word to color. In the word clue set, students have the CVC word to look at and find the matching word to color in the puzzle. No prep! Just print and go.

CVC Blending Cards: CVC Cards in 7 different styles for differentiated learning. Let these cards grow with your students! 85 words covering short a, e, i, o, and u. Each word comes in 7 different styles including phonics dots and arrows, phonics dots, word only, and picture only. Almost 600 cards included! Laminate the picture only cards and have students create the CVC word with dry erase markers or letter manipulatives.

Cards are four to a page so that they're large enough to put up on the wall but still small enough for students to use easily. These are low prep...just print, cut and laminate. Please check out the preview above to see examples of the different card styles!

CVC Word Rearrange Puzzles: CVC Words from short a, e, i, o, and u word families in rearrange/cut-apart 3 piece puzzles. Print, laminate, and play! Puzzles are self-checking and show both the word and the picture when students put them together. This set has 85 puzzles/words and comes in both a full color set and a black and white set. Use the black and white set as a coloring activity before cutting apart to let students personalize their own set of puzzles!

CVC Word Memory Game: The classic game of memory using CVC words! 3 different versions provide several ways to play the game: match word to word, word to picture, word and picture to word and picture, or any combination of the three! Mix and match to increase the difficulty of the game. Includes 85 different CVC words covering short a, short e, short i, short o, and short u. Cards can be separated into individual games for each word family. Print cards on cardstock and/or laminate for durability.

CVC Vocabulary Word Wall Cards: Learn CVC words with these fun vocabulary/word wall cards! Comes with cards for 85 different short a, e, i, o, and uwords and featuring a fun, colorful picture for each word. These are perfect for centers, flash cards, vocabulary word walls and more! This is a monster filled bundle that will meet your needs for centers and activities during the spooky season. See below for the resources that are included along with their details.

Practice Bossy R words with these R-controlled vowel worksheets and center activities. There a variety of activities to help your students learn the different R-Controlled vowels. There is a set for each r-controlled vowel (AR, ER, IR, OR, and UR) as well as packets for practicing the vowels altogether.

This packet includes the following types of activities for each individual vowel spelling:

• 150+ pages of worksheets and posters to practice R-controlled vowels
• 40 unique spelling cards with 3 different formats for a total of 120 cards. One set of cards has the word fully spelled, a second set with only the r-controlled vowel missing and a 3rd set with the entire word blank. Letter tiles are included.
• 44 reading and blending cards are an independent where students will read the words and then open the cards to see if they read the word correctly. There are two sets of these cards: one set with the words color coded for beginning, middle and ending sounds, and one set with the word in all black.
• 5 flower craftivities, one for each r-controlled vowel.
• 44 clip cards for students to place a clip on the correct r-controlled vowel to complete the word.
• STAMP IT pages: one set to stamp just the vowel, one set to stamp the whole word, and one set to cut and paste letters to form the word.
