All SLPS know how much language is embedded in our students' math lessons. Students are often prompted to answer questions verbally while learning new concepts. We know that our students with speech language impairments often have difficulty with this and need greater support.

STEM activities in the classroom are a fantastic engagement opportunity! Students enjoy challenges, show off their creativity, develop partner skills, and much more. Recently Dollar Tree had these National Geographic books. Wow! What a great find. Hint, I check my local Dollar Tree for this typeof book frequently. STEM challenge cards were created for each of the books. Most of the cards will have sentence from the book and a challenge activity for the students to complete. You decide what supplies you will provide for your students. There are so many different supplies to choose from: craft sticks, legos, pattern blocks, straws, linker cubes, buttons, q-tips, dough and toothpicks, and I’m sure you can think of lots more. This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 hour to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available alongside STEM and STEAM bins, makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!

⭐Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out the STEAM / STEM worksheet with some of the challenges that require more problem solving and creativity.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, followed by show and tell with the class, or their families. Students can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.
