Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure (positive and negative) both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making, behaviors, emotions, and self-esteem. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations when dealing with negative peer pressure and hard to take risks when experiencing positive peer pressure.

PASSAGE TITLE: “Lockwood Avenue”

This resource includes ONE full-page reading passage related to Risky Behaviors. The passage is in dialogue form to make it more interesting and relatable. To determine whether this passage is suitable for your students, this is what the passage is about:

A high school teen is peer pressured to cut class and sneak out of the school building with her male friend because her next period class English teacher is absent and there is a substitute. This high school teen must consider the consequences and make a decision. (Negative Peer Pressure)

After students read the passage, they will complete a worksheet that consists of four open-ended questions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

A very detailed Answer Key is included to help you review the answers and engage your students in meaningful discussions.

❤️ When/How to Use the Writing/Discussion Questions:

The Writing/Discussion Questions can be used as a writing assignment or for discussions – your choice! You can use the Writing/Discussion Questions either before or after students read the passage.

❤ Use Questions BEFORE Reading

The questions can be used before students read the passage to build background knowledge of the topic presented in the text, or students can use the questions to engage in meaningful discussions to prepare them for the reading of the text.

❤ Use Questions AFTER Reading

The questions can be used after students read the passage to express their “new” understanding of the topic presented in the text. They can also be used to give students an opportunity to apply or share what they have learned from the passage.

You can use some questions before and after they read the passage – it’s totally up to you!

Learning and talking about the LGBTQ+ community is important for our education. Educating students about the LGBTQ+ community can greatly enhance their understanding on how to properly interact and appreciate their fellow peers. Having that knowledge prevents them from judging others.

This LGBTQ+ Scenario Packet provides opportunities for students to work through how they would handle particular situations regarding gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ issues. This resource features 44 highly relevant SCENARIOS that students can relate to and use to help them practice navigating conflicts related to gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ issues.

These scenarios provide real world situations and challenges that students (or teens) have encountered or may encounter in the future. Students will think through and game plan the different ways to handle the difficult situations presented in the scenarios. You can have students work on these scenarios independently, in pairs, or in groups. Instruct them to brainstorm and talk through different options, or possible solutions, to the problems.

The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. Their journeys become easier when they are surrounded by supportive people who demonstrate social awareness, kindness, acceptance, understanding, and most importantly, empathy. These scenarios can help students build awareness of the challenges and struggles many of their fellow LGBTQ+ peers face.❤️

This resource includes both print and digital versions (with text boxes already created)! You can assign scenarios to students in person or remotely – either way works!

RESOURCE ITEMS

▶️ SCENARIO TASK CARDS (RAINBOW and B&W)

This resource includes 44 LGBTQ+ Scenario Task Cards with and without questions (in colors Rainbow and B&W). The Task Cards include highly relevant scenarios that students can relate to followed by questions. Also included are the same scenarios without questions, so you can generate your OWN questions and activities for the scenarios! You can use the B&W Task Cards to print out on ANY color paper!

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

Role-Playing: The scenarios provide students with opportunities to discuss, understand, and role play the variety of effective ways they can navigate challenges related to LGBTQ. You can also have each pair read their scenario and then role-play the scenario in front of the class, trying to find a positive resolution to the situation. Students can brainstorm many ways to communicate feelings and boundaries. Each pair also watches another pair’s role-play as commenters: they have the power to freeze the action of the role-play and make comments and suggestions to the role-players to guide them towards a positive resolution. You can use the Task Cards with no questions to generate your OWN questions and activities!
Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and how they would deal with certain situations. It may assist you in getting them to buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can swap papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios/situations.
Discussion: Students can discuss the Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class.
