English as a Second Language (ESL) Game | English Conversation Practice

By Jessica

Use this game to get your students speaking in English! Yes--even the shy ones!

✨Take a peek at the preview to get a closer look.

WHAT IS INCLUDED?

  • 6-page PDF file
  • Directions
  • A game board
  • Game pieces
  • English question sheet for low-level beginners
  • English question sheet for mid-upper level beginners
  • Game vocabulary cheat sheet

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Print out the game board, questions, and counters.
  2. Divide the students into groups of two or more.
  3. Give each group the counters, one die, the game mat, and the game questions to begin playing.
  4. Note - There are two versions of the game questions: One version is for lower-level beginners and includes the answers. The other version does not include the answers so it challenges the students to speak in sentences without reading.
  5. The first player rolls the die and someone else in the group needs to ask the question in English. Encourage the students to not repeat questions!
  6. The player who rolled the die needs to answer in English using a complete sentence. If the player can answer the question in a complete sentence, they can move their counter on the game board the same amount of spaces that they rolled with the die.
  7. Repeat for the next player until someone from the group reaches the end of the game and WINS!

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Teachers: You'll love this as a resource to practice asking and answering questions in English.
  • Homeschooling Parents: This game is perfect for getting your kids to practice speaking English so they can use it later in life!

FEATURES

  • Each page is 8.5" x 11", but you can adjust this in your printer settings.

ESL Reading and Listening Story Lesson You Smell Bad

By Frenchified

Make learning English fun with this simple, comprehensible input English lesson plan and story. This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Comprehension activities to use after the story will allow you to engage your students and make sure that your English lesson is truly comprehensible input.

Annette  loves cheese. She REALLY loves cheese - so much that she smells like cheese. Her boyfriend Peter doesn't like cheese at all. How can Ingrid reconcile her love for cheese with her love for Peter? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • smells bad
  • I don't love you anymore
  • a lot of cheese
  • She puts

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and an animated mp4 version. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just over 5 minutes long, with pause time for students to read the text. There is a second version of the video with only the illustrations - no text - so you can watch it and do story retells. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

Here’s what you’ll get in this English Comprehensible Input Lesson:

• Links to the videos both with and without the text

• A printable pdf version of the story

• Comprehension question worksheet

• "Who said it?" worksheet

• Story retell worksheet
