Flexible Seating Classroom Research

By Professional Development and Teacher Prep

Do you need flexible seating classroom research to increase academic achievement and reduce behavioral issues? Flexible seating classroom research is needed by administrators and teachers but is flexible seating research for parents as well.  Your flexible seating classroom layout can vary but you will need the research and data to drive your why and to do what is best for kids.

This is the first paragraph to the introduction of the book. “Some teachers believe that students should be able to have room to reflect on their thinking, movement options, and ability to cooperate with one another (Delzer, 2016; Klein, 2016). One means of encouraging these options is flexible seating. Flexible seating allows students in a classroom to pick their favorite spot to learn. Flexible seating increases the engagement level, which can reduce behavior problems (Delzer, 2016; Klein, 2016). The students’ learning place could be a yoga ball, wobble stool, yoga mat, standing station, or many other options. Students are given choices to pick their learning place, comparable to the choices the outside world gives the students (Delzer, 2016; Klein, 2016).”

This e-book includes an exploratory study on the behavioral effects of flexible seating that was completed by me for my dissertation.

The chapter topics include:

  • Introduction to why students with and without disabilities need flexible seating.
  • Background.
  • Significance of the study.
  • Students are off-task.
  • The purpose of the study.
  • Findings.
  • Research Question #1 What are the perceptions of special education teachers regarding the behavioral benefits of flexible seating in the classroom?
  • Atmosphere, well-being, and choices.
  • Evaluations of Findings.
  • More findings.
  • Implications, Recommendations, and Conclusions.
  • Recommendations for Practice.
  • Link to full dissertation.
