1st Grade Handouts (by date, oldest first)

Move and breathe through a childhood classic. The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood has been a favorite story in my classes for years, and with a librarian’s suggestion, I brought it to life through yoga for the first time in 2012. Now accompanied by our beautiful illustrations, we can use this yoga sequence to promote a lifelong love of learning, reading, and healthy habits.

Each of the characters in the story is paired with a yoga pose, and each page adds another character in order. As the sequence builds, the poses come together in a beautiful flow. Do the poses as you read, or read and then do the poses—whatever feels the best to you.

This lesson plan is a perfect resource for teachers, parents or clinicians who want bring the story to life with movement. We’ve included a story script and a list of poses so children can learn the yoga sequence.

The Napping House Literacy Integration is a 14-page PDF download that you can view on your phone, tablet, computer or print to paper.

Ask the children to use this worksheet to to record what they SEE, HEAR, SMELL and FEEL as they walk outside on a nice Autumn day.

Recommended sequence

1. Review the 5 senses.

2. Take a moment to tune in, breathe, and just be.

3. Give instructions for how to quietly be in the outside world, using keen observation and a relaxed mind to fill in this chart.

4. Give plenty of time for students to draw or write their findings.

5. Come together as a group and find out what people observed and any impact it had on them.

Tips for your mindfulness nature walk

1. Walk at a natural, slow pace. Take your time to take in the beauty of nature around you. Look around you. Notice the trees around you. Are they starting to change colors? Are they losing their leaves?
2. Take in deep breaths through your nose. Shift your awareness to your smell. What do you smell? Does it smell earthy? Do you smell the leaves around you?
3. Listen. What do you hear? Are there animals bustling around? Do you hear the leaves crunching underneath your feet?
4. Pick up a few leaves. How do they feel? Are they starting to decompose? Are they crunchy? What color are they?
5. Shift your attention back to walking. Feel the physical sensation of walking. One foot up, one foot down. Notice your feet touching the ground. How do you feel?
6. At the end of your walk, pause and take a moment. Stand still and take in a deep breath. Take a look around and notice your feelings.

There are SO many spelling patterns that we as educators need to know to effectively teach our students how to properly spell! This handout covers what I think are the most important patterns that students need to know! This is what I wish I had to help explain to students when and why we are spelling words a certain way!

You can provide this to students if you would like but I made it more in mind for you!

Reading and writing with phonics patterns can be simplified! When students know how to break up words or what to look for in words they will have more success! These handouts can be for you to use when teaching concepts or can go in a notebook for students to look at when reading unfamiliar words or spelling words!

These graphic organizers will help you to seamlessly implement word studies!

I have two options so you can choose which one will work better for your students! I also included a handout so that they could have a visual and definitions of what a prefix, suffix, root word, and base word is.

I also include examples of how to use the graphic organizers!

Spelling is hard! There are so many patterns and we have to decide which one to use! This is a handout that is made for students to use as their OWN sound wall. My students always have a binder with helpful handouts for spelling and reading! This one is great! They say the sound, find the patterns that make that sound and spell with it!

It is important for students to know about syllable types and HOW to break them apart. It is also important for students to know the definitions of suffixes and prefixes so that we can grow their vocabulary! These are handouts that I wish I had as a teacher to help me teach syllable types in reading and spelling!
