Directions:

• Display the Google Slide Story Starter OR print them out so students have different stories to choose from.
• Students will complete the engaging story starter by writing for 3 minutes.
• Students can use the picture provided to help guide them in their stories, or choose to take a different route and be creative on their own.
• Students will be split into groups of 4-6.
• Each student will present their story to their small group while practicing public speaking skills.

After students read Act IV of Macbeth, this creative assignment asks them to choose a question to answer in the form of a soliloquy. The options ask them to consider what different characters were thinking as specific events were unfolding in the play. For example, one of the questions is "What is Banquo thinking as he is about to die?"

The instructions contain 7 different questions students can choose from, requirements, a chart they will use to analyze their own writing, and a rubric.

This is a GREAT writing assignment to use during distance learning as a digital assignment. Students can access the directions and rubric in this PDF, and write their soliloquy and analysis chart in Google Docs or whatever way you have them submit their work.

The activity encourages students to be thoughtful with their knowledge of William Shakespeare but also to be creative with their inscriptions. This can be done in or outside of class and also works as a great emergency substitute plan as no preparation is needed for this activity besides printing off the templates. Perfect for distance learning, the assignment reviews the attributes of a vignette and provides the writer with questions to consider before they begin writing. Students are required to structure their vignettes around a theme, and incorporate a strong "voice", just like Cisneros. A comprehensive rubric is included for students to refer to as they work, and for you to use to easily grade the assignments.

My students loved this creative writing assignment, and I was blown away with the products they created. I used it during distance learning by posting the document on Google Classroom, and having my students write their vignettes in a Google Doc. It worked perfectly!
