This 30-slide presentation on the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). The slides include information about the Japanese and Japanese-American internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. Reading Assignment and Worksheet with Answer Key

Analyzing Primary Sources and DBQs

This 23-page resource with 15 primary sources and 2 DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the experiences of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Many students know that Japanese-Americans from the West Coast were interned. Here’s a chance to read documents that shed light on how the decision was made, whether the racial prejudices were shared among all Americans, how Japanese-Americans contributed outside the camps, and how re-integration was perceived. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet.

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

This resource will have students critically explore the period of the Jim Crow era, with a focus on the segregation of schools. This highly engaging, interactive, primary based Slide Presentation will have students analyze and understand the implications of the Jim Crow laws, along with the monumental Supreme Court decisions of 'Plessy v. Ferguson', and 'Brown V. Board of Education'.

The teacher will have a choice of three supplementary activities; 

• The 1st Optional Activity will have students analyze four political cartoons. Students will identify whether the author was FOR or AGAINST the Jim Crow Laws, & describe supportive details from the cartoon on their POLITICAL CARTOON HANDOUT.

This 30-slide Power Point Lesson and Assessment on the Japanese internment and the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei).

The slides include information about the internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions.

This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation.

I hope that students find this presentation worthwhile and deepens their understanding about an experience that should give everyone pause but also shows the resiliency of both the Issei and Nisei during a very difficult time.

LESSON ONE: Reconstruction Era [Intro]

LESSON ONE will have students examine;

• the different ways in which newly freed slaves expressed their emancipation
• the POV of a Freedmen (POV Activity). Students will respond and debate four questions central to this time period from a Freedman's perspective;

2. What do you propose should happen to the ex-Confederate leaders?

LESSON FOUR will have students examine;

• the period of the Jim Crow era, with a focus on the segregation of schools.

Choice of three supplementary activities; 

• The 1st Optional Activity will have students analyze four political cartoons. Students will identify whether the author was FOR or AGAINST the Jim Crow Laws, & describe supportive details from the cartoon on their POLITICAL CARTOON HANDOUT.

• The 2nd Optional Activity will have students critically read a primary source article titled ‘A TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS’, and respond to text dependent questions in their ‘TALE OF TWO SCHOOLS QUESTIONS HANDOUT. The teacher can do a read-aloud, OR students can read independently. Class discussion is encouraged.

• The 3rd Optional Activity will have students analyze a film titled ‘FREEDOM SONG’. Students will apply their knowledge from their guided notes, and respond to open-ended questions in their FREEDOM SONG HANDOUT.
