Use this Valentine's Day-themed AVID speed philosophical chairs icebreaker team-building activity to promote debate through dialogue and public speaking in your classroom as well as get students in the Valentine's Day spirit! Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 5 fun debate topics.

For example, students will choose to agree or disagree with the statement, "Scientists should design robots that can feel emotions like love."

Directions:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and you will define the two sides of the debate (Agree/Disagree).
2. Students move to the side of the room that they intend to defend.
3. An embedded timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.
4. Students attempt to keep contributions to less than 30 seconds each.
5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

Any teacher of middle or high school students knows that emotions tend to run wild on Valentine's Day, and instead of fighting it, this lesson on Shakespearean language will help you to take advantage of the birds and the bees buzzing around in your classroom!

This full-length lesson plan revolves around Shakespeare's mastery of the English language with an emphasis on his knack for coming up with the most compassionate of compliments and scathing of insults. Through a non-intimidating approach, students will have the opportunity to do a little bit of acting and make connections to modern day as they explore Shakespeare's language of love and hate. I am always astounded by the level of maturity of the discussion that arises from this activity as students discuss what makes a compliment or insult particularly effective and from whom it means the most. This is sure to be a lesson that you will use again and again on February 14th.

Celebrate Valentine's Day in ELA with this engaging powerpoint presentation covering figurative language devices in popular love songs!

This fun and colorful 34-slide presentation is the perfect activity to teach during the season of love. Each slide features lines from popular love songs with figurative language from artists such as Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber.
