There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct the first task of our Poetry ESCAPE ROOM in order to get a feel for what our escape rooms are like. The activity involves creative thinking, logic, and collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying (and the number of poems they have analyzed) in the playing of this game!

How does it work?

The ghosts of Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, and Maya Angelou have risen from the grave to lock your students inside your classroom. They are upset because they believe that students spend too much time talking about (fill in the blank with whatever is hip with students these days) and not enough time reading and writing poetry. Students cannot escape until they complete 5 poetry-based tasks to show these ghosts of poets past that they do in fact know their poetry. This resource features task 1 of the escape room:

• Match 'Em Up: In this task, students must match up poetic terms and devices with their definitions. Letters intersected by the lines between the terms and definitions will reveal their code.

This is a graphic organizer for A Midsummer Night's Dream that helps students to track the highly confusing "love arrows" between the four young lovers. You can give this to students at the beginning of the play and ask them to track the love arrows as they read. My students have told me that this simple worksheet has helped them tremendously to keep the characters straight!

Answer key with brief explanations of arrow changes is also included for your reference.

Character traits and analysis fun!

Have some outdoor fun (or use butcher paper for indoors) with sidewalk novel characters! Students choose a character from their novels then do body outlines with sidewalk chalk. My bell ringers are color-coded. Red slides should be covered on Monday, yellow on Tuesday, green on Wednesday (missing from preview), blue on Thursday, and purple on Friday.

Sentence diagramming is so helpful when teaching students parts of speech and sentence structure. The repetitiveness of diagramming for a bell ringer is extremely beneficial for students. I tried grammar workbooks for years, but my students hardly retained anything. Daily sentence diagramming made them remember their parts of speech, and was an amazing foundation for my students to have when we started forming different types of sentences. This primary source worksheet features a passage written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton in Eighty Years and More in which explains why she and Lucretia Mott decided the time had come to organize the Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 which ushered in the Women's Rights Movement in the United States. Students will enjoy learning about the motivations behind the creation of the convention. Two questions follow the Guided Reading.

On the second page, the passage is enhanced with Meanings and Definitions in order to facilitate and improve understanding. A Differentiated Learning Option is also available for students.
