North America Geography Scavenger Hunt - Introductory Activity

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

Who doesn't like a scavenger hunt? Students will find this North America Scavenger Hunt motivating, and it will encourage students to examine the physical, political, economic, and cultural characteristics of North America, including Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This is the perfect activity to introduce to begin your North America unit or as a follow-up activity at the end of the unit.
For this activity, provide each student with a student activity sheet. Students will work in collaborative groups of two to four, depending on their class ability and experience working in cooperative groups using the Internet, books, and other resources that are available to them.

Globalization and Interdependence describes the relationships of mutual dependence between all elements and life forms (including humans) within and across cultures, environments, and social systems. We are linked through social media and telecommunications, the movement of people and ideas (culture), international trade, the environment as we share the planet, and through international political relations and regulations. The easiest way to teach interdependence no matter one's age is to address international trade. Help your students understand globalization and interdependence through this lesson Economic Interdependence and Globalization.

OBJECTIVE:
• The learner will understand the purpose of globalization.
• The learner will understand economic interdependence through international trade.
• The learner will be able to explain the difference between imports and exports.
• The learner will be able to identify cause and effect of economic interdependence and international
trade.
MATERIALS:
• Student Globalization and Economic Interdependence Reading Activity • Let’s Trade Game Instructions and Game Cards
• Space for students to stand in a large circle
• Large Ball of Yarn
• Exit Cards
PREPARATION:
• Print out the Global Trade & Economic Interdependence card, cut, and laminate
• Roll the yard into a large ball to make it easy to toss.

What a fun way to learn how to read a time zone map! If you are doing this at the beginning of the year, it's probably football season, too. Your students will have fun playing football while learning how to read a time zone map. Your students won't feel like they are learning through all the fun! My students love this game!
This is football with a twist and modified for time limitations. Please always feel free to modify our lessons to meet the needs of your students and time restrictions. Enjoy!
OBJECTIVES:
(1) The learner will become familiar with a 24-hour (universal) clock.
(2) The learner will learn and use the meanings of a.m. and p.m. appropriately.
(3) The learner will review the Eastern and Western Hemispheres and will understand when traveling west, one subtracts time, and when traveling east, one adds time.
(3) The learner will become familiar with reading a time zone map.
(4) The learner will demonstrate an understanding of time zone changes
by calculating the time at different degrees of longitude.

PROCEDURE
Reading Activity & Comprehension Game:
Students will work together to complete a geography Valentine's reading activity on the history of Valentine's Day. They will then participate in one of the three-game options provided in the lesson with detailed instructions.
To incorporate language arts into the geography classroom, the teacher has the option to have the students complete a cumulative group or individual activity of creating a poem. This lesson includes graphics to help students understand the difference between limerick, haiku, and rhymes.
CLOSURE:
Groups/Students will present their poems to the class and will be evaluated based on a rubric.

South America Geography Double-Die Scavenger Hunt (Introductory Review Game)

It is important that our student have fun as they are learning! Implement this group cooperating activity as a means of teaching your students the cultural, geographical, governmental and economics of South America. This scavenger hunt has a twist as it is not only a hunt, but also a game all in one. This lesson can be modified to only be used as a scavenger hunt if needed.
The goal of the game is to earn the most points without answering the same questions twice. Students will take turns rolling die to determine which question they will attempt to answer. They will be given 60 seconds and resources to help in determining the answer if they do not already know it. Students will have a blast! Before you know it, class will be over and they will have gained/reviewed a wealth of knowledge.
