AVID Back to School Speed Philosophical Chairs Debate for Team Building: Use this speed philosophical chairs icebreaker activity to introduce your students to public speaking/listening and dialogue! Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 back to school themed debate topics!

For example, students will choose to agree or disagree with the statement, "everyone should be allowed to bring their pet to school."

The Steps:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and we will define the two sides

of the debate (Agree/Disagree).

2. You will move to the side

of the room with the position that you intend to defend.

3. A timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.

4. Be concise and attempt to keep you contributions to less than 30 seconds each. The goal is to have an up-tempo debate, where the arguments for and against the prompt are batted back and forth with quick, verbal strokes. When the timer goes off, the conversation is immediately over.

5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

You need your new batch of kiddos to get to know their classmates to ensure a wonderful new year. Then check out this fun Name Tent template activity that will get your students making connections with their new classmates...with activities that aren't lame!!! Pull these name tents out during Back to School season to get your new batch of kiddos making connections from day one!

Each name tent is a half page (landscape). Copy on card stock paper to make them stronger. Fold the page in half and stand on the desk. Students fill in the sections and use color to express themselves!

Have students complete their Name Tents then exchange with a classmate to play 2 Truths and a Lie. Alternatively, you can ask for volunteers to play Two Truth and a Lie with the entire class. When they miss, they have to answer a question and lose a chance at points.

How to Play Bottle Flip

• Place students into random partners and give each set of partners a water bottle to flip
• Print discussion cards for each group
• Have students get out paper for scoring
• The oldest student flips first
• If they flip the bottle and it lands upright, the flipper gets 2 points, and then its their partners turn to flip
• If they flip the bottle and it does not land upright, they have to draw and answer a random question
• If the flipper answers the question, they get one point. If the student does not answer or says “I don’t know,” the OTHER student gets the point and they get to take their turn
• play for 10 minutes and switch partners!
