ESL Lunch and Dinner Vocabulary Workbook for Newcomers

In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the different lunch and dinner food items presented. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete different lunch and dinner food items vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language word for different lunch and dinner food items vocabulary word. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections with each lunch and dinner food item. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with what is ordered when they go out to eat for lunch or dinner and what their favorite lunch or dinner food is.

- What is Love? Baby Don't Hurt Me: In the fourth task, students must correct past tense verbs within a passage about love.
- How Will I Know?: In the final task, students must identify the parts of speech within a question. Then, they must input all 5 codes into a famous quote about love. Once complete, they must bring to you to escape!

How does it work?
Your students thought they had a grammar test today, instead, you fooled them with an escape room! They are stuck in your classroom until they solve 5 grammar-based tasks about April Fool's Day!
- Don't Be a Crank, It's Just a Prank: In the first task, students will read 8 fun prank ideas (like the classic cream cheese on the toothbrush trick). In each passage, one word is underlined. Students must identify the part of speech of the underlined word by assembling a mat puzzle that, when assembled correctly, will reveal their first code.
- Spaghetti Tree: In the second task, students will read about the epic "Spaghetti Tree" prank done by the British media. In each paragraph there is an incorrect homophone. Students must identify the homophones and write them correctly on their answer sheet. Shaded boxes within each answer will form their code.
- April Foolin' Around the World: In the third task, students must match facts about April Fool's Day around the world to the type of sentence it is (declarative, interrogative, subjunctive, imperative, conditional) by drawing a line connecting the sentence with its type. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their third code.
- Fool Me Once: In the fourth task, students will read 8 "fool" quotes. Each one is missing a comma. Students must insert the comma in the correct place, then write down the word before it. Shaded boxes within each answer reveal the fourth code.
- Encrypted Message: In the final task, students must decode an encrypted message (a Shakespeare quote about the joy of April) from the codes they collected along the way.

- Santa! I Know Him!: In the first task, students must identify the parts of the speech of words in facts about the origins of Santa Claus.
- Bah Humbug!: In the second task, students must identify homophones within a passage from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.
- Belsnickel: In the third task, students must identify commonly misspelled words within a passage about Belsnickel, a character from German folklore that visits children around Christmas.
- 12 Days of Christmas: In the fourth task, students must the verb tense of verbs inspired by the 12 days of Christmas.
- Word Search: In the final task, students must complete the word search containing the names of Santa’s nine reindeer. Once they have found all of the words, the remaining letters spell out a question that they must answer to escape the room.

- Bball Quotes: In the second task, students will read 8 inspirational quotes from famous basketball players and identify parts of speech within the quotes. Once assembled correctly on a chart, shaded boxes will reveal the code.
- Catch: In the third task, students must perform a close reading of the poem, Catch by Samiya Bashir and answer multiple choice questions about the selection that when correct, will reveal the code.
- History of the Madness: In the fourth task, students will read about the origins of the basketball tournament. Within each paragraph, there is one commonly misspelled word. Students must identify the word and write it correctly on their answer sheet. Shaded letters within the correct answers will form their third code.
- Bball Trivia: In the final task, students will be quizzed on what they learned throughout the first four tasks and enter their answers to trivia questions in a fun crossword puzzle. Circled boxes within the puzzle will reveal their final code.

How does it work?
Your students are stuck in your classroom on St. Patrick's Day and cannot leave until they solve 5 challenging Language Arts skills-based tasks that will teach them about St. Patrick's Day, St. Patrick himself, and Irish culture!
- In the first task, students will read 8 fun facts about St. Patrick's Day and must identify the incorrectly spelled word in each passage. They must write the correctly spelled word in their student answer booklet. Shaded boxes within the answers reveal their first code.
- In the second task, students will read 8 facts about St. Patrick and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the second code.
- In the third task, students will perform a close reading of one of Ireland's most beloved poems, Raglan Road, by Patrick Kavanagh. Then, they will answer multiple choice questions about the poem. Letters of the correct answers reveal their third code.
- In the fourth task, students must solve a word maze. Letters collected along the way form the fourth code.
- In the final task, students will be quizzed on what they learned throughout the first four tasks and enter their answers to St. Paddy's Day trivia questions in a fun crossword puzzle. Circled boxes within the puzzle will reveal their final code. Students must act out this word in order to escape.
