Expressing Feelings SEL Presentation and Activity
By Erin Cusumano
This lesson teaches about expression of feelings to others by breaking down positive and negative forms of expression, organizing positive expression into steps, encouraging taking responsibility for your own feelings, and teaching I-Statements.
Middle and high school students can begin to explore how they are responsible for managing their feelings through this topic. The aim of the lesson is to give students the tools to identify and use positive forms of expression and communication. This lesson ties together multiple CASEL skills including self-awareness, social awareness, and self-management.
An I-statement worksheet is included to allow practice of the skill and a no-prep expressing feelings activity is outlined.
The lesson includes a presentation (9 slides), a worksheet (2 pages), and a presentation guide (4 pages).
The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

Peer pressure is real and all too common! Teens constantly experience all kinds of peer pressure both in and out of school. Peer pressure can ultimately affect teens' decision-making. It's often hard to navigate difficult situations and say "no," especially when there is a strong human need to fit in and feel important.
This resource focuses on negative peer pressure, providing opportunities for teachers, educators, counselors, and parents to help students:
★ make better decisions when it comes to awkward or difficult situations
★ say "no" when they have to
★ think before they act
★ consider possible consequences of their decisions
Additionally, the scenarios in the activities allow opportunities for you to teach your students exit strategies or ways to say "no" to negative pressures.
Together, you can think through strategies on how to deal with those situations and scenarios if they arise. This can be done by discussing the scenarios and even role-playing. It is helpful to think about these things ahead of time rather than dealing with situations as they occur or trying to recover after they happen.
Practicing to say “no” in a variety of ways and in a variety of situations will prepare them for real life situations.
The activities and scenarios encourage students to think about and practice how to:
▶ navigate difficult situations and challenges with peers and close friends.
▶ practice and suggest ways to say ”no.”
▶ have difficult conversations with the very people they spend a great deal of time with.
▶ articulate their feelings clearly and appropriately in situations that make them feel uncomfortable.
▶ build confidence in managing their emotions in awkward or tense situations.
▶ handle challenging situations with a sense of maturity.
▶ improve social skills and behavior.
▶ communicate boundaries respectfully.
▶ evaluate best solutions in different situations.
▶ solve problems

Fight, Flight, Freeze SEL Lesson Using "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros & TEST
By Ms. J's ELA
This social emotional learning lesson uses Sandra Cisneros's short story Eleven. During this SEL lesson, students read the short story, view a YouTube video, and reflect on their own stress responses. There are journal entries and opportunities for small and large group discussions as well.
This resource includes:
- links to all relevant materials
- an engaging Google Slides presentation to follow
- a lesson guide which lays out each step of the lesson along with timing
- a self-graded Google Form test
This resource could easily be used by a substitute.
This lesson has always been a favorite of my middle school students. The topic is enlightening for kids who have felt stress responses without understanding what is really happening in their brains and bodies (pretty much all kids). Eleven is a fantastic story to use when learning about stress response because readers are often frustrated by the way the main character responds to the stressor she faces. This is a great way to integrate SEL into an English class.

Impact of Your Words - Middle + High School SEL Activity and Interactive Lesson
By Jeni Donath
Creating a positive environment for students is a top priority, but it can be difficult when individuals lack an awareness of the impact of their words towards others, especially when it does not affect them in the same way. This activity brings awareness and a better understanding, while also increasing empathy and care toward others. I also like to remind students that we cannot control what other people chose to say and do, though we can take time to educate and create awareness, especially when something they are saying or doing is impacting us. This lesson can be customized to fit whatever statements would be most beneficial in recognizing within your school.
