Social cues —both verbal and nonverbal— and body language are everywhere we look—often communicating more than words ever could. A raised eyebrow, crossed arms, a quick glance, or even silence can completely change the meaning of what’s being said. Sometimes, people need to “read between the lines” to fully understand the message. For students, the ability to recognize and correctly interpret both spoken and unspoken signals is an essential life skill. It helps them respond appropriately in conversations, build stronger relationships, and avoid misunderstandings.
This **Social Cues Mega Bundle **combines four powerful resources to give middle and high school students multiple ways to practice reading, interpreting, and responding appropriately to social cues in a safe, structured way. Making social inferences means understanding information that is inferred or not directly stated. It involves observing a situation, then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what has happened or what is happening. The ability to make social inferences is an essential social skill. The pictures are designed for middle and high school students with images of both younger and older people to help you better differentiate for your students.
Use these 30 pictures, in a variety of ways, to help students make social inferences and develop a social understanding of what they see. ▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.
▶️ This lesson plan will help students learn how to read, interpret, and think about social situations. ALL pictures are age appropriate as you will not hesitate to use any picture during the learning process. - The Picture Task Cards contain highly relevant pictures of people using body language to communicate meaning and feelings. The body languages of the people in the task cards portray body gestures that students are familiar with and that they often see all around them in a variety of real-life social settings and situations. ► Worksheet Variation #1: Contains three questions about what a person's body language is communicating, what it indicates he or she might be feeling, and how you can best respond to the person in that situation. (This is a perfect opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)
► Worksheet Variation #2: Contains two questions about what would be an appropriate response in the situation presented, and what would be an inappropriate response in the situation presented. (Another great opportunity for your students to practice social skills and empathy!)

► Picture Worksheet Variation #1: Contains two questions about the message the person’s body language is sending, and how the person is feeling. In this worksheet, students have to provide evidence to support their answer about how the person in the picture might be feeling.
► Picture Worksheet Variation #2: A blank space is provided for you to generate your own question and students write it on the line and answer it.
This resource provides a perfect opportunity for your students to understand social cues, interpret body language, practice social skills, and make inferences. This resource features real life scenarios and highly relevant photographs of people. Students with autism spectrum disorders often have the most difficult time with these skills and can benefit greatly from the visuals.
SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:
How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards
- Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
- Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
- Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
- Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

Making Inferences is a challenging skill to master, especially for lower-level students. This resource includes two sets of Picture Inference Task Cards (80 cards in total) that are differentiated to meet the needs of both lower-level and higher-level students. The pictures in these task cards are very relevant as students "see" these everyday images almost anywhere they go!
DESCRIPTION
▶️ The first set of 40 cards, which are the color RED, have pictures that students can use to make inferences. These RED Picture Inference Task Cards include guiding questions to help lower level students make inferences.
▶️ The second set of 40 cards, which are the color GREEN, have the SAME pictures that students can use to make inferences, but without the guiding questions. Instead, this set of Picture Inference Task Cards read: “What can you infer from this picture?” and “Why do you think that?” These questions require high-level students to think for themselves as they pay close attention to picture details.
▶️ Finally, this resource includes a Picture Inference Worksheet that students can use to record their inferences and evidence. Students can record inferences and evidence for two pictures.
▶️ This is engaging practice for your especially ELL and Special Ed students and is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.
Suggestions on how you can use the Picture Inference Task Cards:
1. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Picture Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same Picture Inference Task Card number or you can distribute 1-2 task cards to each student to practice making inferences and citing evidence before reviewing.
2. Mini Lesson - You can load these Picture Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference, while paying closing attention to details. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these task cards to discuss the difference between relevant picture details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these inference task cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.
3. Exit Slips - You can use these Picture Inference Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 task cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.
4. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test/question each other.” Partners not only ask each other to make valid inferences and support it with relevant picture details, but to be open to a variety of valid inferences that can be made from the same picture.

This reading passage examines the short story of a teen boy who desires to be TikTok famous. Through this text, students will assess the sacrifices the teen makes in pursuit of popularity while also investigating the influence TikTok has on the teen's perception of self.
❤️ "An Alter Ego"
This reading passage examines the short story of a boy attempting to unearth whether or not his girlfriend is cheating on him. Through the creation of a fake TikTok account, the boy tests his girlfriend’s loyalty. Students will evaluate the morality of his actions by analyzing the boy’s emotions and the outcome of the situation.
❤️ "Cameras and Mirrors"
This reading passage examines the short story of an insecure teenager as she films a TikTok video with her friend. Students will explore the importance of consent by analyzing the effects on the narrator when the video is posted without her permission.
❤️ "The Scapegoat"
This reading passage examines the short story of a boy who participates in a TikTok challenge against his better instincts. Students will explore how peer pressure influences the boy’s decisions and analyze the consequences he faces for breaking the rules.

Anticipation guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas.
