**Social cues **—both verbal and nonverbal— and body language are everywhere we look—often communicating more than words ever could. A raised eyebrow, crossed arms, a quick glance, or even silence can completely change the meaning of what’s being said. Sometimes, people need to “read between the lines” to fully understand the message. For students, the ability to recognize and correctly interpret both spoken and unspoken signals is an essential life skill. It helps them respond appropriately in conversations, build stronger relationships, and avoid misunderstandings.
This resource was designed to help middle and high school students strengthen their social awareness by identifying, interpreting, and responding to both verbal and nonverbal social cues in real-world situations. Whether it’s noticing sarcasm, decoding body language, or navigating subtle emotional signals in conversations or texts, these activities teach students to look beyond the words and understand the why behind them.
Students are also learning how to read between the lines, pick up on implied meaning, and understand the intent behind words, tone, and reactions.
With each worksheet, students build emotional intelligence, communication skills, and relationship awareness—tools that support not only social-emotional growth but also classroom success and conflict resolution.
Key Themes Students Will Explore in These Social Cues Activities:
▶ Reading Between the Lines
(Interpreting subtle messages that aren’t directly stated)
▶ Tone and Meaning
(How tone changes the meaning of a sentence in conversation or text)
▶ Recognizing Sarcasm and Passive Aggression

When people do things we don’t like, we get upset, angry, hurt, and/or disappointed because they don’t act or behave in a manner that we want or expect them to. Sometimes, we try to force or manipulate them into acting and behaving a certain way. We need to give up on trying to control others by letting them make their own decisions and verbalizing and dealing with our disappointments in an appropriate manner.
It is important for teenagers to understand that the way they react and respond to situations can either add fuel to the fire or diffuse tension, resolve conflict, and minimize negative emotions. Teaching teens how to respond appropriately to situations both verbally and nonverbally, even when they are angry, hurt, and disappointed can greatly help them prevent conflicts from escalating.
These THREE activities will give students to practice managing their disappointments, anger, and concerns in an appropriate manner. Students will practice expressing their concerns, disappointments, or feelings in a way that is mature and respectful.
This resource features a total of 6 real-life, highly relevant scenarios that come in the following variations BOTH Print and Digital):
✅ Variation #1 - Graphic Organizer-style with example - A worksheet that includes a total of two scenarios and an example of how NOT to respond in the given situations. Sometimes, people’s inconsiderate and selfish behaviors can upset, hurt, frustrate, and embarrass you and can cause an argument or conflict between you and the person. These situations can unleash strong emotions and cause resentment, which is why it is important to respectfully raise these issues with the people involved and have these courageous conversations. Raising issues and setting boundaries in a respectful, non-confrontational manner can increase awareness of the situation, resolve conflicts, and prevent damaging relationships.

Most students have cell phones and communicate with family, friends, and classmates through text messaging. Just about ALL students are familiar with text messaging. Why not teach and practice social skills, kindness, empathy, effective communication, and SO MUCH MORE in such a way that appeals to their interests?! No student will be able to resist these activities - for real!
This resource includes a total of 12 Text Messaging Activity Worksheets that come in four different text messaging formats! There are three worksheets for each format, totaling 12 text messaging worksheets. Students are asked to read a text message, some longer than others, and respond appropriately. Responding appropriately to text messages despite feelings of anger, frustration, betrayal, etc. can greatly help students prevent conflicts from escalating and drama from arising. Additionally, these activities give students an opportunity to "FILTER THEIR THOUGHTS and MOUTHS"! They will ultimately understand the concept that it's not what is said, but how it is said. They will feel encouraged to choose their words wisely when communicating with others.
The text message conversations and topics are age appropriate, HIGHLY relevant, familiar, and FUN! Students will easily identify with some of the people engaging in these text conversations. It would be interesting to see what students can infer and how they will respond in such situations. Additionally, you can extend these conversations by having students read them aloud so they can "hear" what social skills sounds like and what it doesn't.
☆☆☆ The different variations can greatly support your differentiation efforts! ☆☆☆

These tools can be used to empower students to develop awareness and mindfulness in their self-communication, particularly when confronting challenges or negative emotions.
