Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This fourth set of bell ringers asks students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. This comprehensive resource will have students critically examine the Vietnam War. The provided slide presentation is full of primary based sources, problem-posing discussion questions, POV simulations, & informative video clips that are designed to engage the students in the learning process. Extension Activity #1: Vietnamese Independence Debate

• Each student will be assigned one of two POINTS OF VIEW (POV);
  1. French business leaders 2) Vietnamese communists.
• Central to the debate are the following questions; Why should the U.S. care what happens in Vietnam, along with what happens in France? Whether the U.S. should feel threatened by communism in Vietnam? What do they want President Truman to do about the Vietnamese Declaration of Independence— support it, ignore it, oppose it? Whether the U.S. government should support the French?

Extension Activity #2: Song Analysis

• Students will compare two defining songs of the Vietnam era; The Ballads of the Green Berets, & the War Song.

Extension Activity #3: What is a Whistleblower?

• Students will analyze four individuals; all of whom revealed information about activity within a private or public organization that was deemed illegal, immoral, illicit, unsafe or fraudulent.
• Students can delve further by referring to the Whistleblower Timeline,  and choosing a whistleblower to research (1700’s to contemporary times). Students will prepare a 3 to 5 minute class presentation.

Need a great world geography activity for your continent of Africa study? These 24 Africa Task Cards are a great way to introduce the unit by having students work in cooperative groups centers or individually to read the task card questions and research the answers to each task card question as if it were a scavenger hunt. These may also be used at the end of the Africa Continent unit to evaluate what students gained during the unit. Display these task cards throughout the room and have students work on a timed rotation exploring the different aspects of Africa such as physical, political, cultural, and economic characteristics. Student answer sheet and teacher key included.

This is a great cooperative learning activity but can be adapted to one student per card if you choose to have them work individually.
