Subitizing - Flip Flops

By Rachel Thiry

Subitizing is the skill of instantly recognizing a quantity without having to count each object. The skill of subitizing aids in students’ number sense development. To play - students will place cards face down on the playing surface. Player one selects two cards, attempting to make a match. If a match is made the player will keep the two cards. Player two continues with their turn. As students play the memory game, encourage students to say something like, “I know this is 9 because I see a group of 5 and a group of 4.” Or “This is 6 because two groups of 3 equal 6.”

By Jessica Renee Montessori - JRMontessori

Do your students need a little extra push to move from a concrete understanding of numbers to the more abstract written form? Whether you use Golden Beads in your classroom or Base Ten Blocks, these booklets are just what you need to introduce and reinforce place value concepts.

Try this sample booklet from the complete series of 12 booklets. You'll be getting the first booklet in the series which will have your students counting unit beads and recording how many they count. See how easy it is to prepare the booklets and watch how your students' interest is elevated compared to filling out a boring worksheet.

The complete series also includes colorful answer key booklets so children can check their own work and two different booklet formats, one for classroom teachers who print many copies of the same booklet and one for homeschoolers who often only print one of each booklet.

What's Included

  • 1 PDF with teacher information (preparation and basic presentation suggestions) to help you get this lesson up and running as soon as possible
  • 1 PDF with the first booklet in the series (classroom version only)

Here's what other teachers say:

"Such a great resource to practice counting, build place value and work with the golden bead material. Not only is this product great for a Montessori classroom, but the concept is transferable to be used with base ten blocks too! I love that students will have their own little books; this always elevates their interest compared to filling out a worksheet. Assembly was really easy too, I actually prefer to staple the booklets first and then stack two sets to cut with the paper cutter, so quick!!"—Buyer

"Our students loved this work and ask for more. They are so proud of their booklets."—Marie M.
