H-Insertion FREEBIE - Speech Therapy - Articulation - Initial Sound Production

By The SLP Curriculum

This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

Find the Full H-Insertion Resource Here!

If you haven't tried /h/-insertion, download this FREEBIE and see it work it's magic!

H-Insertion can help target the following:

  • Phonological Processes: prevocalic voicing, gliding, backing, fronting, stopping, deaffrication, labialization, denasalization, excessive nasal emissions, initial consonant deletion
  • Motor planning and sound transitions for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  • Sound production for children with Dysarthria or weak articulatory musculature
  • Myofunctional disorders including frontal lisp, lateral lisp, limited lip rounding
  • Articulation disorders to target initial /b/, initial /k/, initial /d/, initial /f/, initial /g/, initial "j", initial /l/, initial /m/, initial /n/, initial /p/, initial /r/, initial /s/, initial /t/, initial /v/, initial /w/, initial "y", initial /z/

FREE!!! Concept 33 IMSE OG 1st Grade Differentiated Work

By Emily Juneau

The Differentiated 1st Grade IMSE OG Companion for CONCEPT #33 is an essential resource designed to enhance the learning experience for young students, particularly in the domains of reading and spelling. This versatile tool is tailored to accommodate the diverse needs of both general education and special education classrooms, making it a must-have for any kindergarten educator.

I use this with my special education students as a replacement to the IMSE OG printables for red words, word dictation and sentence dictation so that my students are able to participate in their grade level content even if it is not at their work level.

How to Use Red Words: On the first page, students match letters of the red word first using magnetic letters, then using letter coins, and finally using scrabble letters. On the second page, students place the bumpy screen behind the paper. Then they trace the red word and write the red word in the letter boxes. On the third page, students use letter stamps and a red stamp pad to stamp the word as many times on the line as they can fit.

How to Use Word Dictation: First, students will match the dictated word letters using scrabble letters. Then, they will write or trace the word on the line below the scrabble letters. They will complete each word at the same pace as the classroom.

How to Use Sentence: First, teacher or student cut out each word box (teacher picks level colored or black depending on student needs). If using the colored word boxes, the student matches the word box color to the empty boxes
to complete the dictated sentence. If the student is using the black word boxes, they will listen to the dictated sentence and order the word boxes to complete the dictated sentence. After gluing the word boxes in correct sentence order, the student will re-write or trace the sentence on the lines below.

Skills Worked On:

-Red Word Identification

-Word Dictation

By Come Alive Communications

Have you ever wished students in the prereading and early reading stage could have opportunities to be fluent and build automaticity? How can students who barely know letter names and sounds become fluent? Ready Reads are just what you are looking for.

Ready Reads are warm up activities for the eyes and the brain and can support any curriculum. Ready Read charts cumulatively follow the scope and sequence of UFLI and support the Science of Reading. Use these in small group, whole group on the projector, in partners for accountability, or for students to whisper read to themselves. They can easily be adapted in an I read, We read, You read or Your turn, My turn format. Ready Reads can be used for students to say the letter name and/or the letter sound practicing grapheme recognition as well as phoneme recall. For pre-readers and early readers alike, this activity builds the left to right progression of reading and builds fluency for letters and concepts already learned.
