Have you ever wished students in the prereading and early reading stage could have opportunities to be fluent and build automaticity? How can students who barely know letter names and sounds become fluent? Ready Reads are just what you are looking for.

Ready Reads are warm up activities for the eyes and the brain and can support any curriculum. Ready Read charts cumulatively follow the scope and sequence of UFLI and support the Science of Reading. Use these in small group, whole group on the projector, in partners for accountability, or for students to whisper read to themselves. They can easily be adapted in an I read, We read, You read or Your turn, My turn format. Ready Reads can be used for students to say the letter name and/or the letter sound practicing grapheme recognition as well as phoneme recall. For pre-readers and early readers alike, this activity builds the left to right progression of reading and builds fluency for letters and concepts already learned. This is the building block for automaticity and fluent reading.

This Roll and Read worksheet includes a mix of CVC, CVCe, CCVC, CVCC nonsense words. This game is perfect for RTI, DIBELS, reading centers, tutorials, small groups, homeschooling, homework, sub plans and more! Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students will practice their CVC, CVCe. CCVC, CVCC words by rolling a physical or digital dice using the provided qr code, and then reading the matching nonsense word.

Directions

Rolling the Die:

• Students roll a six-sided die to determine which nonsense word they will read.
• Students can also scan the QR code on the worksheet using a device with a QR code scanner to access a virtual dice roller.

Reading the nonsense word:

• Students match the number rolled with the corresponding word on their worksheet.
• Students read the word out loud clearly and fluently.
• Students should focus on pronouncing each word correctly and using appropriate expressions.

Marking Progress:

• Once students read a word, they should highlight or color the box. They could also cover it with a counter or place marker etc.
• If students roll a number they have already completed, they should roll again until they land on a new word.
• Students continue rolling and reading until they have completed all the words on their worksheets.
